My adventures with Index cable extension
Like several other users, I have my VR play area and computer in different rooms. After some research, I settled on this cable and coupler:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00V7NOV3Q/
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B009HQ1D1S/

Both had positive reports from other users. For me however the combination only somewhat works. I can get an image on the Index most of the time, but there's a lot of sparkling pixels and frequent signal dropouts. Vive works with no sparkling, though it also has occasional dropout issues. Vive with a 10-metre copper HDMI cable and an active repeater works perfectly.

I tried connecting a 4k monitor to the DisplayPort cable (with a normal 2-metre cable between the coupler and the monitor) and it gets a perfect picture at 60 Hz with no sparkles. It's immune to jostling the cable and the connectors too. The signal bandwidth should be comparable to that of the Index. The Index does have a 6-metre cable though, which is more susceptible to signal degradation.

I've now ordered this active, externally powered DisplayPort repeater:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07D949F59/

It also has received positive feedback from Index users, and although the fiber optic cable should have some sort of repeater built-in, I'm hoping that the externally powered device will be able to produce a stronger signal.

For USB extension I'm using this:

https://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/product/19276/gsnkg/Aten-UCE260-USB-signaalinjatkaja

It only supports USB 2.0, but from what I've understood the cameras are the only part of the Index which needs USB 3.0.

Any suggestions for improving the reliability are appreciated.

I got the active repeater, connected it and now I have a perfect picture in my Index. No sparkling pixels and no dropouts. However I had also moved my VR gaming from Linux to a Windows VM with an RTX 2070 instead of GTX 980. Just for the sake of comparison I tried again with the passive coupler, and now that one produces a glitchless picture too. So if anyone comes looking - your GPU may matter too in how well extension cables work.
Would be quite swell if we could get an intermediary extention cable on the steam store, that would just extend the combination cable from the breakaway point, essentially giving the cable 2 breakaway points. Dont really wanna have to extend the power/displayport/usb3 Individually.

I'd pay good money for a 2 meter extender.
