VIVE uses OLED so it can show us the perfect darkness.
But Index uses IPS LCD so the perfect black looks like grey. However Index has great bright colors. sometimes it actually makes me temporary blind.
Note: there's no graphic difference between index and vive. consider them as monitors.
(unless the graphic you're talking about is resolution. index has higher resolution)
so conclusion:
if you are a horror game player who needs great atmosphere, VIVE is great choice.
if you are a tactical VR shooter who needs high frame rate, Index is for you.
have problems where things may look a little blurry. depending on the distance of the object
My IPD is 71.5 and far away objects look a little blurry, up close objects where I have to become
almost cross eyed (due to screens being close) to see the object are clear.
(in VR world, thing from 1 foot to about 10 feet away is clear and crisp. about 20 feet out things start to get blurry. not really because of distance but because the "sweet spot" on the lenses
does not match my IPD.
You can help smooth out the resolution of the OG Vive by upping the Super Sampling, but it becomes quite taxing on your PC. Regardless, the Index (and vive pro) are already very taxing on a PC.
It depends on what you're going to be using it for anyways. If you wanna see clearly, far away in game, you'd probably want a better headset, but the thing is, it will require a much more powerful PC.
If you're gonna be fiddling around and playing casual games like beat saber and space pirate trainer, arcade-esque games, then the original vive is everything you need, and wont kill your bank account. You can see just fine and clear for a good 10-15 feet ahead of you, hence why most games are designed to be right at your face.
