Index speakers not very loud volume
I see people talking about 100% volume on these speakers are too loud? I can play games no problem 100% and i´d even like it to be louder and feel the bass and loud volume others speak of.

Any solution? Tried DDU nvidia drivers, reinstalling realtek drivers, changing ports. Nothing helps.

It seems to be very dependent on the game... for example Onward will blow your ears out with the Index speakers but most other games are not loud enough for me either. It would be very nice to be able to apply a bit more gain to the audio, but I don't know what kind of protection against clipping the speakers have. It would really suck to blow them out.

I mean people are talking about not being able to have beat saber at 100%, i can easily have it on 100% and would like to increase the volume even more.

Yeah Skyrim is quiet and other games are much louder, not sure if loudness equalisation would work as it use to cause problems with the old Vive.

how is beat saber for you? can you play at 100% no problem? or is it too loud?

I have beat saber. It is not loud enough even at 100%. Did the same as OP and much more besides. Even tried the 3.5mm jack and volume is just barely loud enough in the loudest of games.

Anyone have any luck with this? Valve told me to open a ticket and that Motherboard/Drivers seemed to be suspect in most cases, but I have a ticket open for Index controllers and cannot submit a new one. :steamfacepalm: Its just kinda comical at this point. Should I just open a new thread right here? I mean I have done some major troubleshooting by now.

It seems i have tried most if not all software related work arounds and nothing has worked. It seems like my HMD might be getting rma:d, according to what i last heard from the support. its really the only issue im having with this kit, and im pretty positive i will get a fix. support has been awesome to me so far

Looking the same for me (pointing to hardware at this point). As soon as I can make a ticket, I will. I wish my friends had an Index. Would be the simplest of tests to swap it and see. But yeah it truly sucks. Looks like I got a lemon, but then... apparently quite a few got the same faulty hardware.

I had the same problem and all the work arounds people suggested were just copy and past of other people's not working answers everywhere i looked. anyway, while the positioning of the ear pieces helped a very tiny amount, i got the volume fixed by instead of mirroring the audio in the steam vr settings, i set the headset audio as my primary audio device. it went from a whisper to hurting my ears on beat saber lol

Can you clarify that a bit for us? I wanted to try, but when the SteamVR starts, the deafault audio device already changes to "Index HMD" Nvidia High Definition Audio. What was your "Mirror Audio Device" in steamVR setting set to before and after. I mirror to a TV or sometimes nothing at all. I never even thought to mirror the audio to the Index HMD.

I got my replacement HMD and it made no difference. Could you clarify this? Sounds like a solution i have not tried yet.

This is how I set the primary audio device on my system...Windows 10, with onboard Realtek audio.

In the task bar, or in my case, the hidden icons tab, right click the audio icon. Mine looks like a speaker. Select "Audio Devices" from the drop down/up box. A selection box will open with your audio device choices. Look for your HMD listing. I use a rift CV1 so mine says "Headphones, Rift Audio". I'm not sure what it will say for the index, but probably something similar. Rigth click on "Headphones, Rift/Index Audio, select "Set as Default Communication Device" in the drop down box. Click OK.

That's it you should be ready to go. This will turn off your regular speaker system, so go back to the audio selection box where you selected headphones, and set "Speakers" as the default to turn your regular speakers back on.

I have to do this every time I use the Rift in Steam VR. A pain in the ***, specially when I get all set up, in game and realise I forgot. I hope I don't have to when I get a Index, but it sounds like I may have to

Make sure to un-tick 'Gain Reduction' in Steams audio settings. Worked for me.

Appreciate the advice. It was something to test. UnfortunatelyThis does not work for those having this issue with the valve index. I've even taken it a step further and disabled all audio output and input recording devices except the index. No change
Stedios Aug 22, 2019 @ 11:01pm
I think a lot of it is down to surround, sound on the Index the loudness is lost when positional audio is active, I have the same thing on my gaming headphones, when surround sound is on everything is not so loud, when I switch to just stereo then it's just at ouch! levels.
