Is the Base Station required ?
Do I need a Valve Index base station if I only want to use the valve index for headtracking in flight sims and simracing games ?

You need at least one Lighthouse, what's enough for 180 degree recent tracking. Maybe you can get some used v1 Lighthouses.

Yeah, the Index is also compatible with LH v1. Maybe you'll find a cheap offer.

i used my index for watching movies in a virtual cinema yesterday, watching some 4k and 3d movies. it was amazing, actually felt like being in a cinema. when i took the headset off i realised i hadnt even turned the lighthouses on. so it depends what you want to do with it.

That would be new to me but also good to know if I can use the Index without base stations for 3DOF

So if I understood you well you had a freelook (looking,: left, right, up, down) enabled without the need of a base station ?

Yes, you can look left, right, up and down but not move forward, backwards and strafe left or right. It felt weird when I tried it and costs a lot of the immersion. It may be ok for watching movies.

I see. It could be ok for simracing but not for flightsims. Thanks for making it clear !

But how hmd switched to 3dof mode? On SteamVR start it should wake up basestations and wait them.

To me it doesn’t make sense. Even moving forward/backward get tracked by BSs

I only get grey screen without base station... are you sure that i can use it without base station ?
SCSI-Terminator Nov 24, 2019 @ 6:31am
Yes, you do need a pair of base stations to get positional tracking of the headset, even if your just seated in front of your desk.
