This is probably something worth fixing in the code - if the game consistently can't handle high resolution displays then having a capped default in there would help. (Asking people to modify a file by hand is not a great solution, but might be worth doing for a while to see how many people's problems it fixes.)

fwiw, I did what you said and it tried implementing that res as full screen still, wth. C'mon devs, how hard is it to put a "windowed" option in a game?
I just fixed it myself. My notebook has 2 graphic cards, Intel and NVidia. The game was for some reason running on Intel as default. I changed it from the Nvidia settings for this particular game to run on NVidia only (not auto) and it got fixed. The game plays just fine now.
Hopefully, this solution will help others too.
