Urgent Quest that pops up can be done once every time they are up. So in theory if you are on long enough, you can do more then one a day.
Right now there is a seasonal event ongoing. You can play the Limited Timed Quest, do the seasonal board racing quest(It has a chance to drop seasonal scratch tickets for roughly a 2 min quest), or farm for seasonal points in combat area to trade in for useful items at the seasonal npc shop.
As a newish player, you may want to grind for some of those seasonal points to trade in as the item in the shop will be a major upgrade to what ever you are currently using.
Lastly, you do have the option to play the original PSO2 game. Your character looks and cosmetics transfer over but not your equipment and class/level and vice versa. Playing the original PSO2 rewards you with cosmetics and stargems.

As for catching up, NGS has been very generous to letting people catch up. Going from 0 to 80% will take you about a week even if solo. Just guide your friends to do the legwork on the story till they're done and they should be able to access everything except the harder Time Extension Quest.
Farm/Grind for seasonal points. Buy the gear in the seasonal shop as it will be a huge power spike. You and your friend can go into a combat zone and grind some points or do the board race seasonal quest.
If they are too low level to equip the items in the seasonal shop, do a yellow trigger together and power level them. Yellow trigger gives a lot of xp per run.
Yep, exactly like you said, I tried to make my friends play but they to stop playing because of how little there are to do together and how you need to wait for than to catch up to you or vice-verse.
Good thing is they can get a weapon at 65(just need to get to that level) that will really boost their BP, and the trigger quests only the party leader need to spend the trigger key, so you can spam "West Aelio Battledia: Yellow (Aelio Troopers)" until they level to 65, after that they should rush the story till Stia so they can do "Dreisen Plant Battledia: Yellow (Stia Troopers)" until they get to max level, and you can buy yellow trigger for only 1000 so yea its really cheap and fast to max level, not only yellow but all tirgger keys are cheap because noone do anymore so everyone is selling for cheap!
After that you will be able to do everything together, only the Main story, main story is single player only!
Is there a New Genesis lobby-sitting bingo card? That could be fun for a while.
