Why not just reboot base PSO2 as "PSO2 Classic"???
Clearly many players want to relive PSO2 as it used to be. Why not just create a separate server for PSO2 as it was before the game ended? As in, start PSO2 at an earlier episode, bring back all the scratches and everything else exactly as it used to be, and give it a slow progression towards the end. It would take many years to exhaust all of the content if they released it at the same pace as it was in the past, and it would provide players with a game that they used to enjoy.

I firmly believe that it would be a huge hit, and that Sega is missing out by not doing this.

Their attention is not on PSO2, it's on their upcoming Supergame release in March next year. They had a lot of failures recently, like the cancelled Hyenas and layoffs so they're focusing very hard on March 2026 as a make or break time. PSO2 isn't a priority for them at the moment, they'll keep churning out content but nothing groundbreaking IMO.

I guess it's not good for investors? How can they promote the new game when much of the audience is playing the old game?

At least that's how I rationalized the Nintendo controversy over the years. Not saying that's necessarily true and I realize it's complicated.

The reality is many players want to play the next hyped anime videogame, not old ones, currently Wuthering Waves. Then players then move on to the next hype one like Zenless Zero, Mugen, Arknights Endfield, and whatever comes out in 2025.

Blue Protocol despite the bad reviews is still hyped because it's a "new game".

Because of this Players will likely not return to classic PSO2 server the same way only 5%-15% of 1 block is the player population of base PSO2. Unless Sega spends a large amount of money to hype a "classic" PSO2 game like Amazon does, ignoring that the current base PSO2(+NGS) has all their cosmetic that players own still exist.

Cosmetics collection the primary reason why NGS is not PSO3.

There is one thing interesting though if the datamining hearsay are true in X-Twitter, there is an upcoming spinoff game based on PSO2 lore.

>>>>Why not just reboot base PSO2 as "PSO2 Classic"???
-SEGA didn't care and never consider about player complaining PSO2 and PSO2NGS is just one in the million game they develop they didn't care if it have to die or not even though base PSO2 was one of the most success MMORPG before New Genesis was release June 9, 2021 ....9 years in Japan only 4 years on global thousand thousand of players playing base PSO2 now left with nothing base PSO2 main lobby become ghost town ...SEGA didn't care and never consider this game is going to be death game they got more game to develop...it is what it is

PSO2 Quna Concert already tell it all from her song lyrics-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SArx-AvcSM

we,ll feel forever,
though we can,t share it now
still holding on, no matter how hard
we,ll come through,
you,ll always be with me
i,m reaching out , but can you feel me?
through my voice, hear my truth,
and the vow that we,ll meet again
Though trials may come and go,
i,ll find the strength , i know
still holding on , no matter how long,
"Sayonara"
this is our final breath

I am assuming OP is referring to a classic server in the same vein as WoW Classic? If that's the intention, it's very difficult for it to happen due to player numbers. I have no real evidence other than what I've seen about Sega's games and what opinions I've seen, but I don't see the numbers to justify splitting the current user base into two separate games.

In my opinion, it'd make more sense to have a remaster of PSO 1 with P2P connectivity, or a remastered Phantasy Star 1-4 in a single package with tuned sprites and QOL features.

One last way to bring something more or less akin to PSO2 stages into the current limelight would be, since the story seems to be pushing to it, to make a sort of "visions of the past" NGS stage where players "step into the shoes" of the old PSO2 heroes and play in old PSO2 stages but with the current NGS tool kit. Maybe even go further back and throw PSU/PSP2i/Nova or even PSO 1 stuff. I mean, Nameless city is already Tokyo 2.0. Might as well bring the rest in. I'm willing to fight boomas again!

steam isn't the main playerbase but 1.5k players is insanely low

I would like that PSO2 would be saved by SEGA, but I know that it's pretty impossible. Playing mainly on the JP server, I can say that at least on my ship(it isn't the ship 2, but another ship with the 95% of Japanese players), there is still some people in PSO2, compared to NGS, I mean, the population is low in both games, but since the NGS blocks are smaller(100 players) compared with PSO2 Block(150 players), I could think that the population is split in two.

During the Japanese peak time we have also two full rooms in Emergency quests(UQ) for the most popular quests(I'm not talking only about cradle, but also the other that aren't Buster Quests or Mining bases ), so I think that there is still interest, but the problem is that if SEGA wanted to invest in PSO2, they had to do it before, now is late.

Then PSO2 is under a different producer than NGS, I think that Satoshi Sakai finished his work with it and when I read on the technical SEGA Blog talking about NGS as example of a way to prolong the life of another game , I can assume that it was a way to save PSO2 and avoid to close it with the end of Episode 6(of course this a my assumption not real facts).

Anyway the fact that they remove the PSO2 day it's clear that the effort to put in it is always less, so I don't think that SEGA will want invest in it making a Classic server, anyway I hope to be in mistake, I would be the happiest person in the world if they would make a classic server.

Pso2 classic will fail like Rift classic, maplestory classic and so on. No one wants that horrendous grind again. Also WoW classic lasted a year then most servers were dead.

Reminder the reason why pso2 global kept a rather healthy playerbase was due to how fast the content was pushed out. While a fun game, it would of been drip fed like with NGS.

Rose tinted goggles and all that.

pso2 had a good run. shame to see things be this way. see it abandoned and forgotten. not done the justice it deserves.

Still lots of content that was never localized, too. 😔

I currently have zero desire to play Base, but I might if there was some sort of WoW Remix take on it like with Pandaria.
Plaguelight Jun 23, 2024 @ 12:15pm
For the same reasons they won't do a PSO1 Classic server: money. It costs, it won't pay for itself, and people would STILL find something to whine about.
