There's an option to disable snap-to-grid. I can't remember where, but it was damned useful for that exact scenario

I forget keyboard controls but to disable grid, you hold down left trigger and hit Y to open settings then the second option has 3 settings> 0, 1/2, and 1 when it comes to grid snapping.
