But there are improved versions of the first Phantasy Star: the PS2 Sega Ages remake called Phantasy Star Generation 1 (because it got one sequel for PSII but sadly never for PS III nor IV), the Switch Sega Ages version by M2 with QoL improvements such as a minimap and less grinding and finally the SMS Power fan translation patch which is closer to the original scripts, has a lowercase font and added several QoL improvements such as a faster walking speed and x4 XP and Mesetas.
I still wish they added Phantasy Star 1 back here with those improvements, a minimap and an included item and weapon guide.
PS: I know it's very unlikely but I'd like to see a remaster of the Java Mobile Deluxe version because of the new sprites and look even if it's a different one from the original.
Nostalgia is basically what makes Sega still barely alive today, even the Yakuza series is retro at this point.
Wrong. If really Nostalgia, Sega could have created the exact same formula as Phantasy star of 80s past. Even Yakuza changed to a turn-based game. It's never retro but modernization of meaningful IP. Hence the "open world" nature of NGS... I won't be shocked if there's a shooter battle royale eventually, overwatch style... lol.
Not those remakes or remasters either... Square enix and capcom, f off already. Oh yeah, I remember something else, Sony and last of us. 70++ bucks for nostalgia... lol.
Sega has other games that sell. Total wars series notably and upcoming being endless dungeon as well as company of heroes 3.
The Panzer Dragoon remake was a bit divisive but at least they didn't forget about it.
I still wish they let Evening Star handle the Sonic series.
I can't fully agree with this statement concerning the market of dungeon crawler games. I wouldn't dare call the Monster Hunter series a niche game anymore seeing that they give you hubs to hunt monsters and the like(very similar to how base PSO2 operated). Spiral Knights used to be a very popular dungeon crawler game, but got bogged down with publisher issues and lack of updates. Warframe is still kicking to this day and the planets you land in are glorified level packs with a requirement.
Also, the average amount of players pre-NGS was higher than post-launch according to steam charts. My read on the sitch post launch was that people wrote NGS off as another cookie-cutter open world mmo after the flaws poked out like a cold sore and left. While your point on dungeon crawler games hold some water, NGS entered into the over-saturated market of open world mmorpgs with no flair to it. Thus making it as bland as the other open world mmos.
New tech has to have trailblazers. There's no definitive VR RPG, and PSO would be a good place to start. A game with limitations like PSO would work well for a tech still experiencing limitations itself. Besides, it would let Sega do something about 'going back to it's roots' while still exploring new ideas at the same time.
A more modern looking Phantasy Star will always sell better than anything that looked like 8bit era Phantasy Star. If Sega was to go back to certain look and play style, I would go as far back as Universe, everything before then looks and plays dated, and I include the original PSO in that. A more modern take on the Phantasy Star Universe era could be amazing with the right dedication behind it.
Also even if Online may be a bit slow and dated they could still reuse the setting of the Online or Classic series for a modern take instead of Universe, I mean the gameplay would be modernized.
Yes, but they are even more niche than the already niche fanbase that the series currently has.
OG Phantasy Star takes place in the Algol System. Where 3 Planets were used to seal the Profound Darkness. The three planets within the Algo system was used to seal away the Profound Darkness. Every thousand years, the seal weakens and the Profound Darkness sends a small part of itself to do its bidding and break the seal (the planets), it became known as Dark Force (Falz). Each game in the of series is dealing with Dark Falz and defeating it. And all the destruction and chaotic aftermath from the previous games remained.
Up until the 4th one where the Great Light Profound Darkness was made (story wise), in which for the final time (in the series) you take down all of the Dark Falz and Profound Darkness once and for all, and thus saves the system and the universe.

Maybe if it were given the 'Persona treatment'. By that, I mean really modernized version of classic turn based mechanics and loaded with style and personality.
