They were a class that was left in the dust all the way back from their creation in Episode 4 and had all sorts of tedious chores and tasks that needed to be done so they can compare with others - and in specific content this "compare" means completely breaking the game due to their nature and in other pieces of content it's being completely incapable compared to other classes due to the bugs and wonky nature of the class.
I personally don't think the Waker is the way to go either - but this is a far more friendly approach to a "Summoner-like" class without the baggage and stress the older Summoner was.
But sadly it seems they are about to ruin it.
PSO Summoner was unique because mostt games just make Summoners a Mage where the skill animations are made into animals. This now happens in NGS aswell. Your Summonings are just skill animations you dont have a Pet. Thats not even a band aid anymore.....thats a Mummy.
Maybe there are some Sub class benefits that can save it because i would like my Bow Braver with some Huge Bird (if it scales wirh Ranged Potency). So mybe i can make a Braver Falconer out of it but outside of that this class seems very meh.
I do not know if the links are still up for it, but Player Surveys conducted during the Japanese version's events showed that the Summoner is very consistently among the least popular Main Classes and Subclasses. Alongside being towards the bottom of that, they were ranked highly with the Force as having the most "dissatisfied" users as well. Both the Force and the Summoner are very low on those population lists that I recall.
This makes sense on paper and for how the class appeared - but Summoner in Phantasy Star Online 2 looks nothing like how it is actually played and this huge discrepancy in how you properly build and play the Summoner is why they were such a pain in the first place. Perhaps it may be fun to gather Star Gems because you really want to collect the rare candy needed to optimize your pet and that your grind is longer, harder, and more tedious than every other class combined - but that particular sort of gameplay was what put me off of the class.
On to of that, the Summoner had the absolute range of being the laziest class that AFK-clears content for players and being the most broken class in the game over such simple mechanics.
Which was true.
I'd say SEGA knew they couldn't do it right after the failure that was summoner, but needed a class to stand in it's shoes, and this is what you get.
I only found the 2019 one and there Techter was the least played class and summoner was second last place.
I still believe it was a bad idea tho and make Summoner a Force with Animal skill animations.
Photon Blasts in base game had better monster spawns, even the base summoner dog was cool.
A monkey and a bird. . .ill pass.
Edit : in base game the story was dark, in NGS the story is childrens show, in base game the Photon blasts and the Dark blasts were cool, in NGS we get a bird a ballon and a monkey as summons.
SEGA'S target audience is 10 years old kids for sure.
They literally went from dark comics PSO2 to fairy tales NGS.
Base Summoner was so unnecessarily convoluted, you were forced to min/max it no matter which route you took, or be absolutely awful at your role. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but it was the micromanagement involved that was super annoying.
The new class quells all of those problems.
The best I can hope for it is that it allows you to use any Potency type and still get full effectiveness out of all three summons. Otherwise.. what would the point be? You'd lose out on 33% of the class instantly by being pigeonholed in to one type of Potency.
So I'm expecting the first and required skill in the tree to be an All Potency conversion skill, which takes in to account any type, or all three types. That would be better all-around because it means you could use that class at any point with your current min/maxed equipment (save for the weapon, of course) and be super effective immediately.
However, this also sort of makes a person pause and wonder what they're going to do with the Luster class.
Personally, I see it being a melee and ranged combo class, similar to Braver, but most likely with a Potency conversion skill like I mentioned above (which by all means, Braver should have).
If we're lucky, a double-click of WA will allow you to change types (I doubt we'll see 3 styles like in base PSO2) on-the-fly, without the need for a dedicated weapon for each style.
But, I guess we'll see.
For me , it's just the 9th class to level to max. On my main and possibly on my alt.
If the animations had something like dragons / dark wolf or insert what ever cool animal i would like the class.
But a bird a monkey and a baloon?
I don't have to play a class to do not like it.
I prefer to use Houndooom, Charizard, Nidoking etc., than to use Mr. Mime, Hypno, Skarmory.
People facetanked as a Summoner? lol, they have a nice dodge! why bother face tanking when the Pet has auto attack and you can just glide around evading ♥♥♥♥
Vapid generation, fashion rules eh :)
And yes, sadly TEchter is the least liked class. That's what we get when dumb SEGA gives almost no support skills to a support class... Main question : WHERE'S ANTI ???
Yes. Yes i did....sue me. x,D

Anyway, while Summoner isn't the worst class, it definitely has lot of problems to solve for people who dislike the class.
PS: The OG classes were actually one of the more disliked classes due to how old they are.
