How many characters for free?

I only have 2 characters but some forums say you can have 3 total. I'm a bit confused as I can't create a 3rd character.

When you go to the character log in screen, how many slots there are shows how many characters you can create.

Check to make sure your third character isn't on another ship as it's three free characters in total rather than three per ship.

There is a "Where is my character?" option on any ship you select so you can see all the characters you have across all ships. By default you have up to three characters for free.

3 free character slots, every character after that is 5 usd in AC. However, if you delete a character when you have more than 3 characters you wont get that extra character slot back.

Didn't know that! Thanks! Thought it was per ship.
