Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis

State of the japanese server
At the time of me posting this it's 12 pm in Japan, sunday.
Autumn seasonal event is also ongoing at this time.
On my ship there are barely 3 filled blocks, the rest is empty.

It might be different on other ships, I don't know.
Make what you will of it.

a dead game would have <500 players, and would have barely any cosmetics in the shop (ie, no more whales scratching)

pls stop the hyperbole.

Episode 5 director?
Looks like it's 3x more alive compared to global which usually have only single block fully filled.
Can you check price on market of Wet & Long and MTN: Idle - Yummy Ice Cream? I'm curious how expensive they are on japanese server.

If anything, this just highlights how bad global is. Don't they have 10 ships? It's just one country, and it has more players than the rest of the world combined.
Ship 2 has two full NGS blocks and then there's a ton of players playing the base game. A lot of folks that are new never completed the campaign and they're still grinding the story mode.

What you're seeing now are the numbers that PSO2 started having after December 2020. It's really not that surprising.

They made the person that almost killed PSO2 during EP5 to direct NGS.
I don't know what is Sega thinking.

There isn't really a ton on PSO2. I'm looking at the blocks right now and it's probably only 300 players max on Ship 2. Ship 1 is probably similar and Ship 3 and 4 must be pretty much dead. So probably 600-800 players on PSO2.

That is still a big chunk of players not playing NGS though. That would put current NGS players around the 3000 mark on Steam, and it's falling by the week. Even the event didn't bring players back.

People say it's not bad, but Japan on it's own has more players than the rest of the world combined, and Japan's numbers aren't considered great. So if their numbers aren't great, what does it say about the rest of the world? Unless there are a ton of whales playing the game, I doubt Sega are too happy that the game is steadily losing more and more players.
Japan's always had more players than Global does at any given moment. Japan's numbers aren't great and JP don't like what SEGA's been up to lately either. SEGA regularly gets roasted on social media by its JP player base.

That said, NGS's numbers right now are very similar to the numbers it had in May 2021, which had 3,558 average players with a peak of 5,581 players. NGS released in June. August had 4,548.3 average players that month with a peak of 11,270 players.

tl;dr PSO2 prior to NGS has been here before, just this same year. Is it good? No. Is it expected? Absolutely. Ever since August 2020 it only ever loses players over time with the exception of December 2020. Then were more declines until June 2021 when NGS released on Steam.

We're also not counting Microsoft Store and Xbox numbers here.
ship 1 and ship 2 alrd as dead as ship 4 and ship 3 a month ago,
which only have 2 bloc filled at peak time, and quite room open for those 2 block when its not peak.

Keep COPING guys.
Global economy sure is bunkers considering bots, exploiters, scalpers, cheaters, and not many scratching enough or artificial low supply to kick up the prices.

JP in the other hand had way less of that compared to global but doesn't mean they don't exist in JP just that there is too few of them to really do enough damage so fast.

Plus there is Sega giving this stupid featured item crap making some items bare minimal price 500k and can't go any lower than that even for the most troublesome items to sell that hardly anyone wants.

I can't say the game died its more in stasis till more content or good events eventually comes that just brings back the players but if it doesn't then Id at least consider the game dead well done.

Although what can you do? Phantasy star had always been a grindy game as far as I can remember and if there is nothing left to grind then only thing left to do is sit around looking pretty or play other games to grind in.

We have players that play games for the grind and players only around for the new things then leave while the rest stick around in the waiting room pondering what to do while having off topic discussions that may be interesting to read.

I tried to poke as much fun out of this game as much as I can through different ways be it story, grind, exploring, treasure hunting, slaying, best records, and getting the best gear that I find to be for me just for that 100% completion run.

Then I join the waiting room since hardly any other MMORPG with combat like Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis as many of them are just mediocre in my opinion.

So as long as there are mentaly sick people paying (gamblers and FOMOs) the game is in a good state ? Yeah using the mentaly weak people as argument is a low blow my friend...really low.

Well if people have money to spare and can spent it without affecting anything in their life, they are mentally ill then, got it

I really don't want to say that you have the mentality of the poor and stingy ass, but you do
Those that spent on gacha often know what they're doing, only a small percentage of them have issues with their spending habit and spent everything they have which only then you're right, unfortunately that not always the case nor happen to most either

So does a game need 500,000 active players to not be dead to you?
jurassic park but with no dinosaurs to see, would you still visit the park?
That's how new gen feels currently for a lot of people, and for the rest of us we sit and wait for the inevitable replacement of the director of episode 5 with the one from 6.
