EDIT: Almost forgot to mention, ropes CAN be purchased from the merchant if you'd rather spend coin than iron/lead.
Rope is also an early game material. Later you wont find as much nor will you really need it. Especially after you get the magic mirror, which teleports you back to spawn location.
The iron chains are available also.
At the same time, prior to all this, people would use wooden platforms or build a kind of staircase with blocks (which you dont want to do), or even dig through dirt/stone in a staircase pattern to get to a lower or higher section.
That is, until you get the grappling hook . So one of the early goals will be to get a hook from a skeleton or piranha.
Depends on how lucky you get and whether you've already made a staff of equal or greater quality to whatever gems you have to make the hook out of. So far, I haven't really had any trouble getting hooks from sources other than the new gem hooks. In one game I got a web slinger and in the other I just got a lucky hook drop.
I am curious as to how good they are as grappling hooks though since i've never had to make one. Are they just as good as the regular hook? I mean, they eat enough gems that they probably should be...
