It's a bit more plot-heavy than I would've liked for a sandbox gane but for those players who absolutely need a story it is probably as close as you will get.
The game is mostly nudges to other games the developers enjoyed. Anything else is just pieced together from the scarce and meme heavy dialogue of NPCs.

^^^ Terraria does indeed have a fair bit of lore that is not yet revealed in the game itself but it is on the official site if you want to have a look. And, yes, it is official. So if it is in there then there is no more room for guesswork.
Regardless, there is no narrative in the game. Since there is no story to follow. That kind of 8 year old "omg my first rpg" ancient power/creation of the world background(lore) is worth nothing.
It is still official. That is all that needs to be said. You not wanting it to be worth nothing means nothing. You still cannot say Terraria has no lore because that would be a lie. Terraria *does* have lore. You can take it or leave it but no more lying, please.
Other people can take a look at that page and decide for themselves but if anyone is still wondering about any sort of lore then I recommend clicking that link. I would prefer no misinformation be spread in this thread.
Prior to reading the lore on the official site, I kinda thought of the worlds in Terraria as sort of an inter-connected multiverse in the same way the TV show Sliders did back in the late 90's. Your character was a human from Earth who was stranded in a parallel world and trying to get back home, and the cultists were like the Kronaks(?) sent to hunt you down and colonize each world for themselves.
One thing I don't like about the unofficial lore surrounding the Guide was having him literally be the Wall Of Flesh. I thought he should have been an ordinary human who was merely being possessed by the Wall Of Flesh and who was only evil when under control by the Wall.
Oh well. Not my game.
Interestingly, Redigit hinted in his pre-alpha playthrough with Blue that the world was supposed to be a future Earth that had undergone a zombie apocalypse. Or something like that. It is in one of the videos in that LP and you can find it in the Re-logic Youtube channel.
EDIT: Fixed two typos.
That was an accurate summary of my experience as a new player.
Serious question on that note: Is there any form of tutorial?
After the char/world creation on normal (have not tried journey yet) I was just thrown in there, chopped some trees and was surprised that ESC opens my inventory...Would appreciate some in-game guidance (if there is)?
And also the official wiki helps as well:

There was a tutorial for the console version but not for PC for some reason.
