Does lava count as a trap?
Would using lava solely to kill things spawned from statues prevent some from dropping items?

If the lava is shallow enough your items will be fine but the damage will still occur to mobs, I use lava in my base defense all the time.

Do they still drop the items though?

i havent tested it with dangersense potion but it does make good traps because if you only use enopight lava to hurt the mob but not so it covers a whole block because then the items will be burnt

its a effective early game trap though but it does work

No reason that they wouldn't, drops occur regardless as far as I know under any condition. Remember that honey and lava act like water. If it drops while they are in water, then yes it will definitely drop if they are standing in lava.

Drop rates are lowered when the enemy in question is summoned with a statue.

The rates are lower but the rate still exists. Lava wouldn't make it stop dropping entirely unless they specifically patched it recently and I am unaware of it. I say 99.9% chance they haven't.

Some drops don't appear at all depending on the enemy.

Blessed apples don't come from unicorns, for example.
Okay thanks guys.

Not for lava though, it isn't a trap: http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Trap. As I edited above, it's the same as water. Unless they patched it.

I have a lava trap at my house, its 13 blocks wide and uses 1 lava buket, with a raised block at a pressure plate in the middle, and the walls are super dart traps + flame traps. Very useful for events.

EDIT: Forgot to mention it also has geysers below it.

Only problem with this is that it wouldn't work for all summon drops. It's not the lava that is the issue but the traps with this one.

Mobs that can't drop via trap kill can be seen in this list : http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Statue

I have a lava trap, and have tested it with statues that don't drop items when killed by traps, and after hundreds of kills I haven't recieved any drops.
Lava definitely counts as a trap.

Using lava ALONE? Unless it was mis-advertised yes, that will block some monsters from dropping loot if they were statue spawned since players have to inflict damage to it. It was a change added in 1.3.1

The enemies that do not drop loot if statue spawned and killed by environment/traps is the unicorn, drippler, blood zombie, medusa, wraith, undead viking, harpy, and pigron.
