Melee is definitely not bad for actual survivability when you consider they have the highest defense+damage reduction as well as spammable vampire knives. For DPS they're pretty lousy though. Melee is basically like the tank in MMOs. it's not really designed to dish out a ton of damage as much as it is to absorb it. Hence why most endgame armor sets make enemies focus on you whilst wearing them.

Speaking of melee... north pole spear+fire gauntlet=Snowflakes that light enemies on fire. It's like A song of ice and fire.

1. Solar armor isn't the best, really. I personally prefer vortex or nebula
2. while the terrarian is the best yo-yo in the game, yo-yos aren't really the best.

the fun of terraria is progressing through the game. getting end game gear right off the bat takes all the enjoyment and the feeling you accomplished something away.
