Map Disappeared In My World.
I played Terraria on another PC without any of my save data but logged into Steam. When I played again on my regular PC, I had all my progress and I uploaded it into my Cloud. However when I opened my world all of my map had gone even though all the things I've done in the world are there.

Anyone know why this happened? I'm fine with getting it all back - I'm just confused as to why it happened. Thanks in advance.

Interesting that would imply that Steam Cloud doesn't really proprely backup the .map files to cloud.

.map files are located in your Documents/My Games/Terraria/Players/Your Player Name
They have very long names with letters and numbers which corespond to each World's ID that you visited.

These are the ones that store your explored map progress.
Only way to get your map back is to backup those from your other PC if there are nowhere to be found on your current PC.

On a side note you can share those files with other characters.
If you want to say visit your old world with a new char and you don't want to explore everything all over again there.

This is an unpopular glitch that Terraria has when using the cloud function. Your missing world or World Folder is likely in the recycling bin, just restore the folder to fix the issue.

Don't start the game though, as the same thing will happen or the World Folder or world you're looking for might disappear again & you won't be able to retrieve it afterward! Once the Folder is restored, save a back-up copy to another folder unrelated to Terraria for safe keeping just in case this happens again.

It's always best to save back-up copies of your world & characters often in an unrelated, separate location. Good luck!

And this is one of many reasons why steam cloud sucks, especially for Terraria.

I never trust Steam Cloud and their potato servers for any game.
If possible its best to always keep a good ol USB stick / drive backup handy.
Just in case Steam Cloud fails.

My first attempt to use steam cloud to try to transfer files over to my laptop resulted in red text worlds and characters that were unusable on both computers. Thankfully I had the foresight to put the stuff on an external harddrive as a manual backup first. Otherwise that would have resulted in a world and character that had thousands of hours of mileage on it that just went 'pblt'. So yeah. I pretty much disabled steam cloud period. Much safer, and honestly not that much more work, to simply put the files on a flash drive and transfer it over manually.

I wasn't able to access my world in my other PC yet somehow my map files for that world (all the worlds I think) had disappeared. I've basically gotten my map back at this point so it's good - I'll just use a USB stick next time I go anywhere else. Thanks for the help.
