So no, not really.
Now of course I fight the EoC in Expert Mode the same way I do in Normal Mode but in pre-Hardmode it is a good weapon to fall back on when you aren't sure yet what it will take to defeat a boss.
In my case, I had a world that wasn't being used for much other than gathering materials, but I was collecting Fallen Stars that I didn't plan to use, seeing as the character collecting them had no use for them at the time. In my case, I had many stacks of 99 Stars, almost filling the entire chest.
The question I'd ask however is... why wouldn't I simply craft those stars into Mana, or Star's in a Bottle, rather than use it for ammunition? At that point, you would likely be able to maximize your total Mana. In addition, you have to be careful about each shot, because it's obviously an expensive alternative.
In closing, I would say it's only worth using if you're sure about what it is you're trying to accomplish. Again, the Old One's Army Event & defeating an Enraged Queen Bee early-game are the only circumstances I've ever had to justify its use...
