Definitely, especially in expert. It's great for expert wof fights, as well early hm. The downside is, of course, it uses a lot of fallen stars. Other than that, it does some of the highest damage possible pre-hm(50-ish I think). You can replace it after grinding in hm for a bit(depending on your class)

It works if you need to put out high damage with out having a time limit if you have a limit say eoc you shouldn't use it in my opinion of course

It's decent against the Eater of Worlds, but even then, it's not so much a hard boss that justifies using it.

So no, not really.

The first time I fought the EoC in Expert Mode, I used the Star Cannon. It didn't let me down.

Now of course I fight the EoC in Expert Mode the same way I do in Normal Mode but in pre-Hardmode it is a good weapon to fall back on when you aren't sure yet what it will take to defeat a boss.

I still dunno, its normal mode btw

Not really. The stats are decent but It uses ammunition that is very time consuming to gather in large quantities and this thing shoots them like a machinegun.

Well, my first playthrough of the game i collected stars really fast, because I didn't care if it was night. I had roughly 60 stars for the wall of flesh. Keeping the fact that critical hits do double damage, I was able to get the WoF down well under half health with just the star cannon in a short amount of time. Of course, once you use those stars, they're gone. The star cannon is somewhat of a 1-shot weapon. You save up your stars, shoot them all at one boss, and then you're done with it. I personally wouldn't use this strategy again. Unless you're lucky and find hundreds of stars really fast, this weapon isn't really worth it.

If you make a skybridge, with a layer of blocks under it especially with a minecart track, you CAN get dozens of stars in a single night. But, it's a lot of work just for fallen stars.

the star cannon is a wall hanger at best

It's really up to personal preference IMHO. The only times I've been able to justify it's use were against Enraged Queen Bee & completing the Old One's Army Event without grinding nearly as much. The cost is likely the biggest downside, unless you don't mind porting over certain items.

In my case, I had a world that wasn't being used for much other than gathering materials, but I was collecting Fallen Stars that I didn't plan to use, seeing as the character collecting them had no use for them at the time. In my case, I had many stacks of 99 Stars, almost filling the entire chest.

The question I'd ask however is... why wouldn't I simply craft those stars into Mana, or Star's in a Bottle, rather than use it for ammunition? At that point, you would likely be able to maximize your total Mana. In addition, you have to be careful about each shot, because it's obviously an expensive alternative.

In closing, I would say it's only worth using if you're sure about what it is you're trying to accomplish. Again, the Old One's Army Event & defeating an Enraged Queen Bee early-game are the only circumstances I've ever had to justify its use...

hard to gather ammo but its the strongest pre hardmode ranged weapon

Just as Coin Gun, you need to grind for its ammo, but unlike coin gun which requires platinum to really be worth it [honestly gold coins aren't that great, especelly if you get it late] Star Cannon is easier to get mostly and it does alright damage, if you have chestfull of stars sure, why not.
Zemecon 24 AGO 2019 a las 17:15
Yeah, the reason I say the Star Cannon is worth the investment is that I make a regular routine of searching the surface on most nights if I am in pre-Hardmode for fallen stars because I know I will still need them after filling up my mana meter. It largely depends on whether or not other players will think looking for the stars will be a good investment of their time. I would say it is worth that effort because the Star Cannon is a terrific weapon if you have enough ammo for it, so it is up to other players. The Star Cannon is what you make of it.
