Should I use waterbolt or the diamond staff?

So I am early game in a new expert playthrough, recently killed the slime king, no other bosses killed, and I am wonder if I should use the water bolt or the diamond staff. I hear the waterbolt is so much better, but the diamond staff looks powerful. I am going to take on the eye of cthulu soon, so any tips for that?

just run back and fourth spamming the bolt at it

rails or platforms? i like rails cause their easier but platforms gives more manuverning space. also im in expert, so EoC will eventually just start dashing really fast

rails are better
you want to make the ends so you bump back

yeah, i have a railroad with 150 rails, how many should i use?

Honestly in wide open spaces vs 2 or fewer targets diamond staff is better. Though for more targets or enclosed spaces water bolt definitely is better. A lot of weapons on terraria are situationally useful.
