Are there any efficient ways to farm for fish bait?
The only way I know of getting bait is either fishing for it (getting a wooden crate and unboxing it, getting some jounerymens bait or whatever. but thats not very efficient at all) or going around with a net, breaking small boulders (which is long and extremely boring and also veeeeeery inefficient)

Is there any good effective ways to get bait? The angler doesn't sell bait (which I think is weird) and the methods I've listed above are not either

There's a way to get a ton of bait if you have a golden bug net and flower boots. Go to a patch of grass in a normal, unhallowed/uncrimsoned/uncorrupted forest biome, and put the flower boots on, and just...swing the net. it will spawn and break grass constantly, getting you a lot of grasshoppers and worms. I'm not sure if you'd call that 'efficient' but you can literally just afk it if you put something on your mouse button. If it's not working you might have to walk a few steps here or there until it does.

Didn't know about either of those items

Time to look them up I suppose

well during my jurneys i always keep an eye for bugs, and there are tons of them all around.
Usually by the time i run from my house to the ocean biome, i find about 5 to 8 bugs, which is more then enough for a night of fishing (considering you also find bait in crates, or you can fish pink jellyfish)
Get two blocks of jungle grass on mud, shoot flares into both blocks and stand on them with the flower boots (unless this was patched) and it will quickly shoot out grubs and bugs and buggies. Collect the jackpot when ready.

Also I'm currently rolling in apprentice bait, journeyman bait, and masterbait from doing fishing quests and opening golden crates. Make yourself some crate potions and take to the ocean for the really good stuff.

If you're lacking flower boots, just run across the surface in a new world, cracking open rocks in forest biome for worms.

Combine worms with stars for enchanted nightcrawlers.

I would get something like 25 of these per run, and it was always more than I've needed.

why shoot flares into the mud? how to get flares? is it a flare-gun?

flares destroy the grass as fast as your flower boots spawn it, causing buggy/grubby/sluggy to spawn at a quick rate.

Flower boots and and a weapon with someone catching the bugs
Flaregun, once you have it buy flares from merchant, place two mud blocks side by side and use jungle grass seeds on them, now stand on them with flower boots and shoot flares into them, you just need one flare in each of them, do not continuously shoot flares into the blocks, that's a waste of ammo.
