Is this a rogue like game?
What I mean is if you die do you have to start over with nothing? I heard people said they died and lose everything or something.

Not really. You ONLY loose items if you play mediumcore. But you can always find the items where you died.

Oh so a bit like Diablo 1 or Diablo 2 I guess.

The game I think it is most like would be starbound. It's a sandbox game but bosses and progression.

I would not call it a full on Rogue-like game. I do not really know of the genre but I have a good friend who plays that genre and its his favorite. He explained to me that this game has alot of Rouge-Like Elements!
Most of us play softcore. When you die, you drop some money.

HOWEVER in the Character Creation there is an option for Hardcore - when you die, you drop EVERYTHING & can't get it back on SP.

Needless to say, most of us play softcore :P

I thought hardcore is where you are dead for good?

Indeed, but you can wander round as a ghost for a little while until you exit.

(For the sake of completeness, there exists Mediumcore, which is where you drop all your items but can still go and try get them back providing you don't exit that world)

Yeah, honestly I don't suggest mediumcore or hardcore for the simple reason that Terraria WILL cheat and kill you in ways that no amount of skill, strategy or tactics can overcome. EG: I've had a rune wizard teleport directly on top of me and oneshot me because they do 400 melee damage.

Indeed. I've had similiar cases in the dungeon too, early on with Dark Casters teleporting directly on top of me and knocking me back into spiky balls or other enemies which again, no skill or tactics could have prevented. In most cases Terraria can be generally fair, but when you introduce enemies with the ability to teleport, (Or in some cases necromancers with their attacks that instantly hit an area) there's no dodging that kind of thing. if you are directly in the spot they shoot at or teleport to, you are going to be hit, period. You cannot avoid it. Dying permanently to something like that, or losing every bit of my gear I'm carrying because of cheap shots like that? No thanks.

Starbound is like Terraria, not the other way around.

If Starbound is like Terraria, Terraria is like Starbound. That's like saying wheat bread is like grain bread, but not the other way around.

Nope, because Starbound is shallow parody to cash in on Terraria fans due to post-1.1 hiatus. It's not wheat bread and grain bread, it's an empty cardboard box covered with cream (sb) and a cake (Terraria).

Not very roguelike, unless you play hardcore I suppose.

But even if your character die while playing hardcore you can reenter the world at least. So that kinda makes it like a Roguelike. All character progress and currently equiped gear etc would be lost but the items picked up in that world won't respawn, you will not have to defeat the bosses either since that it tied to the world as well.
The risk is that you will eventually run out of the necessary items if you die too many times.
