Any point to farming food beyond corn?
So aside for things like beats or sunflowers which have other purposes, is there any reason to grow anything other than corn for food? It seems to be by far the most efficient food source, producing like 10 corn cobs per plant with a good farmer (most other crops produce 1) and when cooked that's enough food for 1 person for ~5 days.

I know that salads and stews provide more food, but their inefficiency in production seems to still massively favor corn. Thoughts?

Different foods have different "happiness" values, so better foods will make your people more happy. There's also a happiness boost from having multiple types of food. You can survive on boiled corn for sure, but it will make community morale harder to manage.

Then what's a good food to mass produce? I tried making some stews, but that got very messy with all the containers I needed and how people would just come in, grab an entire bucket of stew for themselves, and run off with it. It seemed very micromanagement intensive and I don't want to mess with that all the time. What's the best way to do it?

Corn is the best food source, however all crop types save for cucumbers and cabbages have important uses. Carrots for stews and bait, pumpkins especially for stews, beets for alcohol production and sunflowers for firebombs, Food also makes a trade good, especially boiled corn. Finally, meaty stews can be given as gifts that everyone will appreciate.

In conclusion, having a variety is good not only for feeding your colony, but also for key industrial purposes later on.

edit: also, when it comes to containers, buckets tend to screw them up. Sealed containers are the best option.

I produce Veggie Stew and Veggie Curry, and in the beginning Salad (it's quicker than boiling corn), and depending on my rabbit situation, Meaty Stew. It takes a little micromanagement to keep the cook's inventory clean, but I don't find it to be too bad. I set my limits to 2000 oz and leave them to it.

NPCs *used to* grab a whole container and walk off, and people would end up with inventories full of empty containers, but I haven't seen that in a number of updates. Now my people just eat out of the barn and never remove the containers. They will still grab a piece of rabbit or boiled corn "for the road" if one is available though, but not containered food.

Playing build 115, and my community still grabs entire containers and hauls them around for a single meal.

Yeah. Can confirm this. In the current version it is a thing.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. So I guess it's just best to feed them boiled corn if I don't want to micro them all the time until the dev gets this stuff fixed up. Maybe there should just be food barrel or something that you build in the world and fill so that there's no containers for them to pick up and run off with. Because honestly, the whole container system is just annoying and pointless with the way it works, even when trying to produce gunpowder and stuff.
