From what I know, either you recruit a survivor that already has the invisible strain and that he/she will spread it by biting your other survivors. You will find that they get injured without fighting anything in your base. The other method is that your survivors are clean but you let in friendly traders or other community members who wander into your base who are infected with the invisible strain. They will turn and infect your survivors. But here's the catch. They usually try to spread it when you're not around to stop it. But you can catch them in the act sometimes. For example, some people have seen that infected survivor from other community would try to bite your follower when you visit their camp.

this can be avoidable by hiting space like the mechanic ingame or is just random?
No the invisible strain infected only target npc characters you dont currently posses. They usually only do it if they're outside uninfected line of sight including yours.

It is possible to catch them in the act but the most obvious sign is if you see random wounds showing up inside your base.

You could technically switch control to the one getting bitten at that exact moment to defend yourself but at that point your survivors would already start shooting if the infected got caught.

That isn't true. I have had someone try to bite someone I just recruited with my character standing right next to them and their other teammates all around, he pushed him away, no fighting started and he didn't get infected. I have noticed IS coming after people I just recruited like this a few times, I try to grab anyone I'm recruiting and get out of there as quickly as possible now. In one of my first games a trader's guard spread it to my camp, the trader was not infected, he bit my person with the trader standing right next to him in the middle of my camp right next to the well, no fighting started. I have also had an invisible strain chase down one of my people before, literally running after them to come and bite them, she was outside my base chopping wood, I noticed someone walking towards her on the minimap, so I switched over to her and started running her back to base, as soon as I did she started chasing her, she was right behind her and going in the gate would have let her in, luckily there was a cliff side with a small island on it so I had her fall down onto there until she went away.
I guess what happened for me triggered a different response. For me i had infected traders camping my entrance and walking towards my survivors constantly. At some point instead of going away they decided to bite one of my survivors right in front of me triggering a firefight.

also they make zombie noices so if there is an infected white strain in your base you can hear them so always be careful i recruited 1 bye accedent even i did check he he looked clair so i was suprised it was in that game may current size is 16 so having Inisebel strain there would be terribel.
i always check new recruits allot and traders i moustly kill them for cause new traders spawn in next day with me or day after so i dont mind.

Keep your base on locked down. Set gate policy always to "closed" so they won't be able to get inside. Otherwise they'll come in and sit by the fire camp to warm themselves. If you're feeling generous then go outside and create a fire camp outside for them but don't invite them in. Unless your brain scanner show 0% of infection. Some infected survivor (traders, refugees and even friendly enclaves) listed as "subtle."

So you can't tell them so easily. Generally lower percent should show no infection. You can also learn the speech test like IDE or market corpse burial test. If they give you the evil smile during the test, then there's a good chance that they're infected. Using a brain scanner, you can keep track of the level of infection on your survivors. If the % changed then you know that she/he got infected by someone.

I think they can also slip infected meat into your cooking pot, essentially infecting your whole base while you're not around, in my game they announced a "zombie uprising" and everyone in my base was turned at the same time.

Zombie meat stew is my go to weapon for wiping out troublesome bases. Pour some stew in and out a bottle and then that bottle is forever what I use to taint gifts to them. Want some free delicious wine, raider base people? With time you can really cause mayhem by the drink or the container being passed on and on. An infected cook pot is the classic if you can get them to use it. That's maybe an option if you want to keep a cleared out base cleared out forever by infecting the pot while it is empty and before new people settle in.
