cooking broken?
Is there some trick to automating cooking? I have a chef, and one-off cooking works fine. But whenever I set a recurring recipe, he says he doesn't have ingredients even though they are readily available.

He should go look for them, he just states this as he does not have it on him, give him a moment and he should go find it, unless for one reason or another he can't get to it or it has been restricted.

I sometimes find water is an issue. I'll ask the chef to make 3 meaty stews and will have the ingredients on them except the water which is in a well 10 feet away. They won't do anything until I take them to the well and fill their water bottles for them. Feels like dealing with a bunch of kids at times lol

This is because you are directing them to make a specific amount, they will only do so if they have ALL of the ingredients on them, if all they have is 1 water bottle filled they will not have enough to finish and will not do so unless prompted. If you direct them to make unlimited they will gather ingredients as they need them including water, same goes with making them a cook, they will cook random things and gather ingredients as needed.

ive been having this same issue even when my character has the ingredients on their person it still says they do not have all of the ingredients, and that's when set to as much as possible.

Are you sure they have ALL ingredients? Water for example. Are they simply stating that they need something or are they not working? They will always state things like "I need something" as long as they have access to everything they need they should go find it. If you have taken over an NPC base be advised you will need to dig up the well and build another as it can cause issues.

yes, bucket of water, 7 cabbages, 14 carrots to make 7 stews and they will only do it if i manually set it to, doing as much as i can make and they still state they dont have the resources., i built my own base and everything. they wont even go look for whatever ingredient they're apparently missing, like ive seen them do for other tasks.

I'm guessing this is for the veggie stew? Just to be sure make sure you did not click meaty stew, if you did they will not be able to without skinned rabbits ready for them. Nothing has been restricted correct? Also make sure they have room to pick up anything they need, if they are carrying too much it may cause a problem. If they don't have anything to put the stew in that may also cause an issue. Have you tried putting the ingredients away and setting them up to do unlimited? Generally speaking when I tell them to make an unlimited amount they do not have all of the ingredients on them, only when I tell them to make a set number. Cannot think of anything else at the moment, it might be some sort of glitch but in my 600+ hours of play it is not one I have come across.

yes i am making sure im making veggie stew, but even still ive got like 12 skinned rabbits that should end up being used at that point. ive seen in several videos that ive watched how when set to being the chef and then setting them to making any item, theyll do it so long as the items are in the camp, ive seen their characters go to the buildings with the resources and take it out, mine wont even do that, ive tried every possible method to get the recurring cooking to work but everything results in the same outcome of them saying they dont have the ingredients. even when my cook has everything needed to make x amount he still wont unless i set the manual limit for just one time cooking. ive got over 100 of each veggie needed, buckets of water AND a well right next to the camp fire(just a coincidence)

In your case, the missing ingredients could be one of the following :

1. Empty Cooking Pot.
2. Not enough plastic containers (or catering buckets).

Try beginning the process by having enough food items for 1 stew (cabbage + 2 carrots) in the cooks inventory. Ensure you have at least 50 FLoz water and an empty cooking pot. The game might be assuming that if you begin with enough ingredients for 7 stews, the missing bits aren't really the food items, but everything else.

I had the same question.
When I set a person to a job: chef, I had to manually do everything.

When I set a person to cook a SPECIFIC dish, they automated.

well being as the pot is on the fire it shouldnt be a problem, and for the setting to be "As much as possible" why would containers matter, unless id run out, which i dont.? he actually grabs the container. i think you are confused on part of my problem, I can make the 7 stews if and only if i do it manually, if i try doing the automated cook as much as possible it gives me zilch, tells me he cant do it and sits there with a thumb up his bum. he will only "automate" what the manual option was set, even goes to the storage to get more containers when he doesnt have more. or are you saying to try setting up the automated process by only having enough to make 1 dish?

You don't need anything in your inventory.

You can't have more than 1 person using the same cook pot.

The cook pot could be tied to another person. Maybe try picking up and placing the cook pot again.

Don't set role chef. Role chef makes them keep the cook pot full. They cook something random whenever the pot is empty.

Make sure they have access to wood/charcoal so they can fuel the fire as well as a way to start the fire.

Yes, start with 1 stew worth of ingredients in the cooks inventory, select recurring. Also, since you are manually using cabbage (and that works), I am wondering if it is assuming the missing ingredient is pumpkin, because the cook seems to use a pumpkin before a cabbage.

EDIT: All my ingredients were set to "don't eat" as I didn't want my people to go through the raw veggies

I tried setting my raw materials to "allow eating" - And now my cooks happily makes things again

Could it be that restricting it to "don't eat" also blocks it from being used in cooking?
