traveling merchants around end game are the best, i love when the leader falls into my pit traps and gives me free ♥♥♥♥.

Sorry to necro, but have any patches changed this aspect of the game yet? Or is everything only from traders, raiders and other NPCs that "show up"? Also if I wipe out communities / kill raiders do more people who up and come onto the map to "replenish" supplies?

No patches have changed this aspect. Raiders will take over dead communities and become looters, refugees will take over dead communities and become friendlies, assuming they don't die out right away these communities can recruit and grow bigger, most of those new recruits are just spawned in but NPC leaders can recruit from other communities including your own.
