Ok, so i've read a lot of discussions but i'm still not understanding, if me and my BF get the game, we can play as a team online against others? (random players) and if so, i'm using a controller and he's using keyboard, how would that work?

Yes this is possible! You would each control one of the characters connected by a rope. It doesn't matter what control scheme each of you use.
