I agree that the game should give you some more information on how to progress.
By the way,
After I finished all of the research, I did not know how to progress to the ending. So, I pretty much stopped playing the missions. I would just keep shooting down UFOs. I was guessing that the GamePeriod value needed to reach a certain number before the endgame triggered. I would periodically check this value and the GamePeriodTriggerCount in the save file. When GamePeriodTriggerCount gets to 10 (for most Game Periods)) the game increases the GamePeriod an resets GamePeriodTriggerCount to 0.
The alien base showed up for me shortly after I got to GamePeriod 28.
Btw, thanks for your extraction tool. Made the game less punishing. =D
You're welcome. Though most of the credit for the tool should go to the original authors. I just made some changes.
I just finished the game a little while ago, and decided to look into how the endgame is triggered. Basically, after you finish researching "The Escape Plan", the game will add an event to your game that will occur in 21 to 40 days. When the event finally runs, the aliens instantly get the base, and you are notified.
Instead, I got the information from these forums and watching a playthrough video series.
In fact, I am still somewhat unsure as to what the exact trigger mechanic was for the protected alien base to spawn.
I assume the trigger is finishing the mind shield research + wait time, but it might as well be reaching era 7 and then some wait time.
Edit: I can see from post above how the protected base gets spawned. Neither of my assumptions were correct.
Over all a good game in it's genre with some issues and bugs and the playtime is stretched out far too long for the content that the game currently has. I finished with played time of 97h.
I will need to see if I can be bothered to make the effort to make a post game review and expressions post at some point.
Like upgrade your Vehicles with better Armor and Weapons.
Or integrate Helicopter in the Game, which get completely Missing in UFO 1 ET.
As a basic for testing in UFO 2 ET it can be if some more work get done the new Standard for such Games. An similar Concept in Xenonauts 2 get in too.
The Devs wanna bring in more of that and other cool things. The chance for that they have in the Refit from UFO 1 ET, which get in WIP wife UFO ET Gold get Stopped for Several Reasons.
The other cool Thing is that you get Ammo-Upgrades for existing Rifles, Pistols and similar.
And I love that the Aliens in UFO 2 ET get upgraded Step by Step and not in the Eat or Die Way in UFO 1 ET.
helicopters sounds cool, yes, but only for defend a static area(because they never can hunt ufos with their limited speed).
upgrades to ammo and vehicles is of course cool! unfortunately there are not much in yet, but maybe in the future i hope? ;) ufo2 can generally handle more usable technology - trees - for weapons, armor and upgrades ...
and stop talking about pistols in ufo 2.. there are not a single one... sadly! .. :P
But if we don´t wanna have Pistols what about MPs?
