VR?
Is this just mouse and keyboard? Cause it'd be super trippy to play on VR

Maybe have a thought about it for a little bit? This simply doesn't work in VR. The whole idea of the game only works because it's shown on a 2d screen.
Imagine the house that is small when he picks it up, and then gets big because the perspective is played with. In VR you'd just see the house go closer/further and grow/shrink in size.
IMHO it's pretty obvious this can't exist in 3d, the perspective completely removes the illusion of what's happening.
Some thing would work, like the portal typ doors where that cabin is bigger on the inside than outside, but that's only a part of the game and something that's been done in games for years.

Imagine this common "game" almost everyone have done as kids: You can close one eye and then hold your hand infront of you, and sort of imagine that you're gonna pinch another person thats 40m away between your fingers. That only works because depth perception is greatly reduced with only one eye, so as soon as you open your other eye the "illusion" breaks, because now you see the distance difference.

Hope that makes sense, it really should because it's second nature, the only real way we can "see" depth on a 2d screen, or with one eye open is being able to move to see the distance difference due to perspective, understanding the environment and pure experience of the world around us, so our brains can sort of fake depth with one eye, exactly how 3d on a 2d screen is faked.

Sorry for the wall of text, thought a few different similar explanations might help someone that reads this. There's more to go into but I'm so sleepy I can barely sit up, so I'm gonna do the nighty night. Cya!

Alyx does plenty of trippy perspective near the end of the game. VR would work for this game even better, it would only increase depth perception.

uh.. no

Optical illusions and perception tricks work even with both eyes open. Ask any magician. And they also work in VR, check Fisherman's Tale or Down the Rabbit Hole.

But I would not be surprised to see a VR, or Stereo3D, mod/update soon (if not out already). As it is built with Unity, it should be a fairly simple task. Not immediate and it does require some energy, but it is not difficult.

So, as someone who does not yet own the game, the question is not wether VR is a thing but rather will a VR version be an update (like No Man's Sky) or a separate purchase (like FNaF: Help Wanted)?

I imagine, with the game being as short as it is and being the first major release from a fledgling indie studio, if Superliminal does get a VR release it'd likely be an option in the executable and not a separate release. Asking people to double dip would be a lot.

+ 1 for VR
Not sure forced perspective can work in 3D. Also partly a reason why Hobbit was not using forced perspective as LoTR did, cause it was shot on 3D camera, to be viewed in 3D in cinema. All forced perspective trickery falls apart at that point.

But maybe somehow it could work if nothing else was defocused or something.. dunno

VR is not 3D, VR is real depth perception with two screens rendering slightly different scenes.

So it really would not work? It would be soooooo cool if it did.

I thought it would work in VR because Alyx had those couple perspective puzzles that were the exact same ideas as the ones in this game.

I'm honestly suprised by how little people understand about VR.
The reason Superliminal's perspective changing illusion works, is because, in game, you have no depth perception. VR, gives you 2 viewpoints instead of one (one for each eye).
This would instantly break the illusion as, instead of seeing an object in front of you appear far away when dropping it, in VR, you would pick up the item, and you would clearly be able to see the object slide around the furthest wall from you as a physical object rather than a projection like you might expect.

TL;DR: The game illusion fools you cause 1 screen gives you no depth perception.
VR gives you 2 screens, eg. depth perception.

You know there's illusions like Superliminal working in the real world, right?

Yeah and they only work when they're either really far away or you close one eye .eg, remove most of or all of your depth perception.
