Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
So, I don't really go for games such as this but it definitely reminds me of the good ol' Xbox Live Arcade, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.

For those that have played both, would you say that they are similar in that regard? It's such a shame you cant play that game anymore but this looks like it might be the ticket.

There are some similarities, that's for sure. I'm 99% sure that the game was at least partially inspired in the SPVTW game - the whole thing about finding stores while moving around the map and then buying consumables and gear from these stores, combined with items being stuff like video game cartridges, is WAY too much of a coincidence to not be inspired in SPVTW.

EDIT: it's actually the other way around, SPVTW's stores were instead inspired in the original River City Ransom. River City Girls still likely took some inspiration on SPVTW but definitely not that part.

Well you technically can play that game, even on PC, but it's sort of in grey legal area.

@Außenseiter: Downloading the ISO of the game is definitely not just "grey". 😁 That being said, we might consider it an abandonware at this point. Pretty sure the actual right owners of the game (Universal, I guess?) don't care anymore.

@Entity's ♥♥♥♥♥: Hard to say as two games are never exactly the same. You might find someone that put you off and feel missing in this other game. For what it worth I had a good time with the two games and they share the same "influenced" by River City Ransom feel (RCG being an official spin-off). 😃

@Yaridovich: But that's how many River City Ransom games works since the NES era. 🤔 SPVTW is heavily inspired by River City Ransom.

The Scott Pilgrim game was heavily inspired by River City Ransom. The formula you're describing is the RCR formula. The Scott Pilgrim comic & movie also reference RCR, most notably with the villains (the evil Exes) dropping money when defeated.

Well, I stand corrected then!

It's kinda weird that I had a NES-compatible console when I was a kid but I never got to play the original River City Ransom.

Forget what I said, then, it's definitely the other way around.

It doesn't quite fall under piracy law because game in question is not being distributed officially.
Not only that but people who PAID for it can't legally obtain a copy either if they deleted it from their consoles after certain date.

@Außenseiter: It's not very important and it would take time to research the subject but I'm pretty what you said was/is covered by their EULA. 😛 But we agree that the risk is null or close to null with this game.

I think it's fair to say Scott Pilgrim's game was inspired by River City Ransom's setup, but this game's aesthetics in turn was partly inspired by Scott Pilgrim's general art style and energy. (as opposed to the original/classic boxy Kunio-kun sprite aesthetic) Which is beautiful and symbiotic really.

I wouldn't bring it up if you could just buy and play the game.
I'm all against piracy, but sometimes companies leave players no other choice.
You just can't play Scott Pilgrim otherwise. Period.

That's exactly why I loved Scott Pilgrim VTW so much. But like RCG I was expecting something more systemic rather than a somewhat linear experience. But with such visual style (these animations, damn), I can understand that these companies played it "safe" on the system-side.
