Aspect ratio
I'll start by saying that the game doesn't render correctly within the 16:9 aspect ratio. This is especially noticeable when playing without screen effects. Some font letters lose their symmetry, and the scene is cropped vertically unevenly.
The game has two resolutions suitable for it - 432х240 and 864х480. They are suitable because they perfectly display the scene and fonts. And already by the numbers of these resolutions, you can understand that this is not 16:9, which would have 432х243 and 864х486, respectively.
For example, a scene at 864х480.
A white frame outlines the vertical cropping of the image at an aspect ratio of 16:9. As you can see, the cut is uneven.

Within the limits of a full HD screen 1728х960 turned out to be a suitable resolution.
For example, pay attention to the symmetry of the letters "W", "M" and the completeness of the scene in 1920х1080 and 1728х960 resolutions. Must be viewed in full size.

The default screen effect "Retro AA" can smooth out font inaccuracies at 16:9, but the scene will remain a bit cropped.
I found a solution for myself, created a custom resolution of 1728х960 for full HD screen, disabled screen scaling and play in fullscreen mode.

Bonus images (1728х960, Custom CRT Royale using ReShade). Must be viewed in full size.

You should also set your monitor to 59Hz or a multiple of 59 for smooth gameplay. This is because the game is oddly running at 59 FPS instead of 60, at least on my PC (easily observed by MSI Afterburner OSD showing 59FPS or by panning around the map which should be stutter free).

I capped the frame rate at 59 (16.9 ms) using RTSS.
I chose to play in windowed mode. In-game vsync is desirable.

Cool so it's not just me that the game runs at 59FPS for. I use the Nvidia Control Panel and create a custom resolution with a 59Hz refresh rate and combine it with vsync.

If I leave the monitor at 60Hz I get a duplicate frame every second.

I think you'll get even better results if you add a frame rate limit via RTSS with "passive waiting" disabled.
