Both Black Knight and Monster mode are the exact same tower as the main three. They are simply "get the three Gorgons and beat the final boss as fast as possible using different movements".
Boiling things down:
Both:
- Campfires only act as save points, and it saves even the amount of HP you have when saving (as well as progression). When the extra character dies, last save is loaded.
- Equipped with Morningstar and Banish abilities from the very beginning.
- Can get through Blue Vines and trigger Magic Orb switches via attacks
- The only NPC that exists in the entire tower is the Bestiary NPC. All other NPCs (in the traditional sense) are gone. Technically, Linus and the Gorgon butt are still present and do evoke dialogue.
Black Knight:
- Ridiculously slow movement speed, but very high jump and fast movement in air.
- Uses melee sword slashes as normal attack (power increases as you collect more orbs), can spend 2 HP to launch a 2x Magic Ball attack using your Special Ability key. Magic Ball can transverse the entire screen and goes through everything. Melee attack can stop flames.
- Has NO candles in the entire tower, instead heals by standing in blood pools. (There is a skeleton that observed this)
- Teleport orbs that you may not have noticed before are used by the Black Knight to ensure he does not get trapped, as some Griffon Claw required ledges can not be made even with his jump. There is one teleport orb for a mandatory Griffon Claw ledge to ensure progression.
- Both in-tower Black Knight fights are gone. Final Boss is only a Black Knight clone, you do NOT fight the Blackheart Medusa in this mode.
Gargoyle:
- Fast movement speed, infinite jump / flight.
- Uses fireballs as normal attack, power increases as you collect more orbs. Has no special ability. Fireballs travel the screen but is stopped by objects.
- Does have candles that can be broken for one-time 5 HP heal (note: one-time for the ENTIRE RUN). All monsters can also drop food when beaten, which can be used as a instant 5 HP heal. Spawn rate of food is probably as common as the green orb drops from monsters.
- Can not climb ladders, however, the top of ladders are treated as solid ground that the Gargoyle can drop down from.
- All bosses are present.
