How to break yellow/golden blocks?

I've seen these for such a long time now, that I think I might have missed something.

I have 5 characters and I have two of the gorgons down, now up in the Ruins of Ash.

Is it an upgrade you have to pick up somewhere or do you have to buy the upgrade for a character?

I noticed that when you hit the blocks with Bram's chain whip, they shake in place but nothing more happens. So I think it's either an item you have to find for him or an upgrade you have to buy, maybe the Golden Axe?

it's in the serpent path, it's near the top of the ruins of ash, behind a red door

Yeah it's a bit annoying that there is not even a hint as to which area you should visit first. Used my only red key to get to an area that requires the block destroying upgrade and now I have no idea where to find another red key. Time to wander the tower for another couple hours I guess.
