If you want to keep building on a single island, I would recommend just playing on sandbox mode. That you can just grab whatever you want and place it however you want to make your island as pretty (or ugly, I suppose) as you want, without any score limitations. Conversely, you can plan your island out to decide where things are going to go and leave enough room to place your optimized builds.
If you really like your island, just take a screenshot to share before moving on.
Hope that helps.
Like already mentioned, the point of the game is not to be like Sim City, where you keep working on a single island. Realistically, this isn't a typical city builder. It's more of an arcade game, which sounds weird. You gather points through good strategy in placements, so you can keep advancing. The entire mechanic behind the game discourages you from staying still. If you want a similar game, but that allows you to really dig in and create a single area that's wonderful and strategic, I'd recommend Banished.
