Support for: macOS 10.15 Catalina
Hi there,

My mac has been updated to macOS 10.15 Catalina and now this game is not playable. Will there be a update so it will work on macOS 10.15 Catalina?

Please let there be support, absolutely love this game and was devastated to see it not working on the new OS

I was just looking for a discussion thread about why, despite running Catalina, I can start Islanders from my library, but it won't show up if I filter for only Apple supported games. I suggest turning off the Apple filter, and try and see if you get the green play button...

I confirm that I am playing this game on a Mac with Catalina without any problem. The game is not starting from the desktop shortcut and doesn't show in the Mac games library, but everything else is working fine. Ignore every message that this game is not compatible, a 32-bit game is not working on Catalina and so on: because it is working, despite is a 32-bit game.

Why not? What do you mean it works, yet it is unplayable? I have Catalina and am not convinced about buying since there seem to be differing accounts about the playability in this OS.

I seriously don't get why there are so many games still coded in 32bit, seriously folks why? It's not like 32bit hasn't been outdated in over a couple of decades.

On a 2019 MacBook Pro running macOS Catalina 10.15.7, the game displays an opening splash screen, then goes to a solid white screen where I get a spinning rainbow cursor forever. I'm glad I got it on sale. :-(

Well it works fine on my Mac Pro 5,1 2010, but at this time it shows me a 5 fps on my Macbook Pro 13 (2019) Catalina 10.15.7! It's a kind of magic?) Please, developers, optimise the game for a 32bit systems.

Works on the unstable branch with me on my 2018 with 10.15.7.

Why 32bit optimisation? 32bit has been outdated for decades. The problem is a lot of developers are still coding for 32bit when the world moved on to 64bit decades ago. I don't know if it's laziness or what but I'm stunned to see new game released still in 32bit

Can anyone confirm whether this will run on an M1 Mac?

Games aren't generally "coded" in 32-bit - smaller studios tend to use game engines and other external tools to keep development costs manageable, which in turn might target 32-bit by default for compatibility purposes.

By the time it suddenly becomes not okay, usually the original version of the game engine can no longer be used due to requirements changing (Apple are perhaps the most guilty of "pay us and use the most recent tools or get out" attitude), and updating to a newer version of the game engine brings an arbitrarily large number of issues (see the ongoing show with Tabletop Simulator update as an example), and thus many games take a while or never update.

Windows is a little friendlier in this regard - you can find a 32-bit game released in 2005 and it'll most likely still work fine on the current version of Windows.

---- Snip ---
which in turn might target 32-bit by default for compatibility purposes.
So compatibility reasons for 20+ year old computers? Nah I say it's laziness

Fair. Then go shout at Unity Technologies (creators of the engine used to make this specific game) for not having done that sooner rather than blaming the developers (example of why this happens[answers.unity.com]).
