Tunnel vision / dark edges of the screen
Hello,

really like the game so far on Game Pass, but one thing is bothering me:

There seems to be some kind of tunnel vision graphics effect where the edges of the screen are slightly darkened. Is it possible to deactive this somehow? It is quite irritating. I did not find any setting in the graphics options menu.

Thanks

No I'm running in regular 1080p. The effect is slightly less noticeably when it is bright, it is more noticeable when I am in a jungle. I tried changing the FOV because maybe that has something to do with it, but it always automatically resets and never aceepts higher FOV.

It's called vignetting. It's a 'film' effect developers add to games like film grain, chromatic aberration and the like. On PC you can likely find a way to remove it through the games files but on console unless the developer adds an option toggle then it's gonna stay on.

But I don't see that kind of effect on Game Pass which is why I'm a bit confused

I'm playing on Xbox and it's there. I doubt it's missing on the pc game pass versions.

I found a thread on reddit where it is described how the vignette effect in the game can be disabled by editing the games Engine.ini file (they talk about a pirated version though, so I'm not going to link it). It is supposed to be under Appdata/Local/COTA folder, but I do not have that folder, I presume because I have the Game Pass version. Does someone know where that file is in the GP version? Thanks

*edit* I think I found it, it is in Appdata/Local/Packages/COTS

Add the following to engine.ini to get rid of the vignette effect (darkening at the edges of the screen):

[SystemSettings]
r.Tonemapper.Quality=1

Thanks for the fix! It was damn annoying having that darkening.

Good lord, this was a life-changing fix. The vignette was insanely large. Posting for search engine relevance.

Almost refunded the game because of this (vignette). Also got rid of the annoying bloom with r.BloomQuality=0

Thanks for this, I too found the excessive vignetting quite unpleasant. As no-one above has explicitly provided the full path to the file that needs editing, I thought it might be helpful to put it here:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\COTS\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\Engine.ini

Then simply add the lines given by Martha Pepper above, which I'll repeat for clarity:

[SystemSettings] r.Tonemapper.Quality=1
