You do realise that this was just the backstory of Gale Crossing and not the story of the DLC.
You can also find screenshots and videos from the old RPG by Big Huge Games before it was reworked into KOA (I made a post on the official subreddit).
38 Studios had also another separate project - called project Copernicus, which was an MMO set in the universe of KOA.
Also, the MMO wasn't specifically funded by the state. It was a loan to 38 Studios and they in exchange had committed to create new jobs.
you have an option to not buy the game..

If this is the effort we get for the backlore, why on earth would you expect any more effort in the story?
