How can I delete my saves without getting "could not read save data"?
A few days ago I got this annoying error and tried enabling/disabling cloud saves and deleting the save data folder as suggested in various threads online. When the bug happened, the log in the install location said "[savedata] Save data file 'autocloud/save/svd_fmt_5_5.sav' doesn't exist." Well I use save editor so I copied and pasted my backup 5-5.sav to the save folder, closed steam, reopened Steam and launched the game again. That fixed it for me.

After I fixed it I tried deleting some of my saves and got the bug again. Luckily I had copied my save folder from when this first happened a few days ago and was able to fix it again with the same method. When I tried deleting my saves I did notice each one was duplicated and when I tried to delete one I couldn't delete the other save. What's that mean? And how can I delete my saves without getting this error? Such a dumb bug. If it matters I always have cloud saving off.

True but saving is a mess in this game. I only want like 2 or 3 saves for 1 character. What they really need to do is bring back save profiles from the original. That was a nice qol feature that's missing here.

Anyway I deleted some of my saves directly from the save folder and it seems to be good now for the most part.

Also lmao I didn't know there was a Geralt emoji here 🤣

i didnt know the og had profiles. interesting they wouldnt port it. surprised iv only heard of this saveing problem since the dlc launch

Yea the save profile thing was an EA/Origins thing from what I read. I didn't know about it until this game had released. And the "cannot read current save data" thing I know other people have had from googling. In my case it may be from using the clothing mod and save editor but idk.

Using the save editor incorrectly causes this from experience when I used it in the past. Making changes to one of the save files that should never be modified (can't remember which one) is what is causing the bug and it's not the game causing it. The duplicate save file is the result of modding that specific save and creating a new modded save of that file. It bugs out the game.

Yea that's what I figured. I got the problem resolved but haven't had much time to play the game since. I'll look into which save files to not touch next time I use the save editor. It's probably mentioned somewhere on Nexus and I just didn't read it.

How did you get it resolved please... and if you find out what files can you post in here..?

I have only used the save editor to get rid of the annoying icons from stolen stuff and and to remove things that it won't let you sell or destroy, mostly books..

Well I had to investigate a bit. When I had the game open I went to where it's installed (right-click the game in Steam and browse local files). Then I opened the .log file and scrolled to the very bottom. From there I did as I explained (poorly) in my op.

So run the game and open that .log file and go from there. You can post the log text here if you want. My power is out currently so I can't help more than this.

Yeah I had gotten the duplicate save not being able to delete bug also from the save editor when I was using it for the first time a year or so ago. I think you can try and save over the corrupted save and then delete it, I think this is what I did to get rid of the duplicate files. I still can't remember which file I was able to fix the bugged game but it's probably the one the OP replaced to fix his unable to save issue. Sorry not much help but hope you guys get it sorted out. I stopped using the save editor a while ago, don't even have it downloaded anymore.

How is the log file helpful though..? I'll take a look, thanks..

Pantherr were you asking me how I resolved my duplicate save issue or the "Cannot read the current save data" issue? If it's about the duplicate saves do what Reflex said. If it's about the save data issue, opening the .log file in the data folder while the game is open will tell you what file is missing. The very bottom line of the text file will tell you. That's why I said you can post the log text here and we can go from there.

I also was deleting saves and ended up with this issue. When I went to load my game I got the can't read message saying I had to play offline and could not save, or something like that.

The only saves it could read was my last autosave even though the save files were there. I had run into this ages ago on the original version of the game so I just gave up on playing for now.. At least now, thx to this thread, I know that the cause is the save editor...

I remember now why you get the duplicate saves and unable to read saves continue without them warning. When you save a new modded save it creates a backup file in the saved games folder. You have to delete the backup folder before launching the game. This will make the save editor work correctly with the game. For some reason the backup save is being read by the game causing it to duplicate it and corrupt the save. Just navigate to the save folder after making changes with the save editor and delete the back up folder. This will fix the issues for you guys.

Damn..... that did it..! I went to my save folder and removed the backup folder and now the game can read all my saves again. That's great, thankyou VERY much.. :)
