Some games just get the dogs set upon them (Project Cars 3, undeservedly, IMO, is another) and they really don't stand a fair chance. But objectively speaking, I find DiRT5 to be a good game - perhaps a little 'one note' (career mode is just a long laundry list of repetitive races to check off), but it is a satisfying burst of arcade racing around some very nice-looking tracks.
No replay mode sucks donkey's balls, and is completely baffling, but as a package the game sports a ton of content (including a custom track builder - albeit gimped into irrelevance). Wait for a sale a pick this one up, if you haven't already. It's a competent racer and, for me, as much fun to play as it is to gawp at (dynamic weather and particle FX are gorgeous).
I think the number one reason for bad reviews appears to be people with technical issues and crashes. I myself have had one crash in this game. I also think the lack of private lobbies for online races was giving this game bad reviews. Thankfully they somewhat fixed that issue with the 4.00 patch. I say somewhat, because the implementation of the private lobbies is limited by always resetting all the race options you choose after every race, which is really frustrating when you simply want to change tracks, but leave other options as is, like laps, car type, weather, time progression, etc.
Codemasters fatigue mostly here, I just feel they've got to the stage where there happy pushing out multiple racing games every year when theres absolutely no need for fluff in the genre, concentrate on making a genre leader rather than saturating the market with average games. Remember when Codemasters made Toca and Colin McRae, they were jaw dropping in comparison to most racing titles of the time.
My library is full of racing games which pummel this im sorry to say. Playgrounds is a good step forward but so many games do it better. I scowl when I see people giving this 10/10 in review press, its rushed to my eyes and unfinished again to my eyes although I respect the devs coming on here and engaging with the few people that post and continuing to work on the game although DLC should come second to QOL and fixes for a game like this personally.
I have high expectations set by whats went before across sim racing, arcade, simcade and console, that's my issue. Blur is better than this and its a decade old, GTA 4 has a better driving model.
Definitely agree about 'Codemasters fatigue'. I think that's a fair observation. DiRT5 screams 'competent, but mediocre'. It really could have been something far better. It's hardly as if CM are short of talent (I dunno - maybe they are?).
No replay mode irks me more than just about anything else; it's just such an unnecessary omission unless there's some unfathomably difficult technical reason for its absence. CM have remained totally silent on the issue - although I've seen a great many requests here for the feature to be added.
some work, others like Fanatec, do not
that is my main issue, fix that and I will buy it
it was fun for the 10 hours I tried it
The very stupid ai and the boring gameplay. It looks nice but thats it.
And its not a rally game. Its more like "Dirt Showdown" which was the worst part in the Dirt game series.
