Can't place outside barriers around two greens that have been joined together

When I merge two greens pieces (say two rectangles) and then select both to place an outside barrier around them, it creates a barrier across the green in addition to barriers along the perimeter. This obviously creates a wall across the green. What am I doing wrong?

Hey there,

Have you made sure the blue handles on the edges are aligned and properly merge together? This picture[i.imgur.com] shows what I am talking about. Notice how there are 4 blue handles on the edge between the squares instead of just 2.
