There could be some problems though :P
1. They need to bring back both the Sega CD and PS1 versions.
2. If they bring the PSP version, they need to fix the music stopping every time you enter a door. But overall I hope they ignore the PSP version.
3. On PSP, Luna's voice in battle was changed to a really terrible singing voice, and I think this carried over to the iOS port which was mostly the PS1 game with PSP audio. This could be terrible, I specifically DO NOT WANT the PSP audio if only for that alone.
4. Grandia 1 looks blurry as heck, they better not do that to Lunar 1 and 2.
what's the difference between the ps1 and psp. i played the sega cd and ps1. ps1 by working designs was great and enhanced a lot from the sega cd. i don't know anything about the psp one
It would be difficult to do it justice from just reading alone, it's best to just look at it on Youtube or something, BUT I'll get you started.
1. Added prologue
2. Redrawn graphics
3. Every area in the game has shrunk
4. Redrawn character portraits
5. No item/equipment/magic icons
6. Orchestrated music
7. New sounds / voices
8. Watered down difficulty
9. Enemies respawn
10. Questionable animated cutscene improvements
1. They added a little prologue about the 4 Heroes.
... this was kinda cool because it has new music that sounds kind of as good as the original game, and some story, but it doesn't add anything of value to the game. It fact it kinda ruins it cause it spoils Ghaleon.
2. All the graphics have been redrawn. All of it. In some ways this can be nice because the world is a lot more detailed and just a bit more realistic, but it rubs me the wrong way because part of the charm of the Lunar games are those semi fat sprites with their nonstop walk animation that was traditional of classic RPGs like Dragon Quest.
3. Because of the graphics being redrawn, the world is much smaller now, and this is a disappointment. It's like they were eager to go for what they thought was an improvement, but did not have the power to improve on everything so they cut a lot of areas from the original game like houses. The towns are much smaller in general and the overworld is like the GameBoy Advance version, which is you just see a map and select the location, you don't manually walk on it. Big disappointment.
4. Character portraits for conversations are redrawn. In a way, it can be cool to see their whole body pose when they talk, but regretfully, some characters suffer from looking a bit like fan art rather than original art. I didn't like Luna... she looks great in the box art, but when she talks in-game, I just don't like how she was drawn. Same for Ramus and some others. However, Alex, Kyle and Jessica look very legit.
5. On SegaCD and PS1, every item and equipment had its own icons.
They're gone on PSP. This is another big disappointment... I absolutely loved that icon art. Now you have no idea what any items look like, you're just seeing words and names. The GBA game did this, although anything that was cut from the GBA game was understandable because that game came out really early in the GBA's life, and they made every effort to fit as much of the PS1 game as they could. Meanwhile, Lunar on PSP came out a bit late, and still couldn't bother adding these things.
6. The music has been orchestrated. In general, it's great. But overall, I find the PS1 music to be more pleasant and cozy as the synthesized instruments are a bit muted and makes the music easy to listen to for long periods of time. The PSP music has all these instruments sound very textured and detailed, it can be more tiring. The battle theme though, it was a slightly bit changed in how some of the notes are arranged and I didn't like it as much. It feels too try-hard.
7. Sound effects and voices are redone. And Im not quite a big fan of the sounds.
Although hilariously this was a problem that plagued the Sega CD version as well. Those really loud hit sounds when characters attack or get hurt were almost painfully loud in Sega CD. The PS1 version has everything a lot more balanced and beautiful.
On PSP though I just can't say the same, they're okay, but the biggest issue is Luna's singing voice in battle.
8. The difficulty seems to have been greatly decreased. I think you can just access 99 healing items from battle with any character, while on PS1 you were limited, and you had to think more. On PSP I can't remember anything ever being a challenge. I hate this, because they're just trying to make the game "more accessible" to make more people play it, when in reality they just cheapen the game. There should be other ways to appeal to more people like more intuitive and attractive menus, controls, and being more in depth while being simple.
9. So the game is easy, but it is now a bit more annoying. I'm not sure why, but dungeons are separated by sections instead of being just 1 big map. This causes enemies to respawn if you return to a section where you had been previously.
10. The animated cutscenes quality. Um, they seem to have improved it by going back to the original higher quality versions and re-encoded them for PSP, but... something went wrong. Not many people notice it, but it has a little bit of a double vision effect, which makes it look fuzzy or blurry. On PSP, this is hardly noticeable cause the system itself is not very high resolution, doesn't even have 300 pixels height... but on the smartphone port, it's very obvious. They need to go back and re-do it properly this time.
OVERALL, despite these 10 points, I enjoyed it very much because Lunar is just that lovely! But it's really frustrating to me because if there's a game I consider deserves to be given as much attention as possible, it's Lunar. Nope, they just did what they could... this is one of the first of MANY games that would show me Japan is forgetting how to develop games as properly as they used to in the 90s.
I am VERY scared of the thought of Lunar coming to Steam because usually, they're lazy enough to just port things as-is and probably even introduce more problems, like fonts. I have hardly ever seen a game developer bring an old game to newer platforms, and choose a properly good looking font to replace pixel art fonts. First of all, I think pixel fonts are great and should be untouched. But no, they want to give us stinking ARIAL most of the time. Just imagining the PSP Lunar on Steam without fixes, with new bugs, and with Arial... I could die.
It's been more than 10 years since the PSP port, I hope they don't just pick it up and port everything in like a month or something. Yet I just dont imagine them fixing anything, so it is best they just port the PS1 versions.
Considering that indies have brought back pixel art for games people mostly played on PC, like VVVVVV and Shovel Knight, both of these games have about the same resolution as Sega CD and PS1 games, but MUCH lower color depth... today the hype hasn't stopped as there are still TONS of NES inspired games coming out, even Bloodstained's spin offs.
There is nothing wrong with bringing both versions of Lunar exactly as they were :D
They definitely should port both lunar games
