Mafia II: Classic or Definitive Edition on first playthrough (Classic 5 - Remastered 3)
Hello:

I am ready to jump into Mafia series for the first time. I thought that the remasters done on 2020, plus the Mafia: Definitive Edition remake could be a good time to start the whole series.

But I have to say that I'm concerned by the messages I'm reading around here regarding Mafia II. Freezes, crashes, bugs that force you to reload an old save, crappy physics or character and NPC animations rendering problems. I see that the developer is not giving support to the game anymore, so it is what it is right now.

In my opinion, a game better polished that might look like L.A. Noire (2011), for example, it's better to play than any other buggy game, with way more errors, just because the graphics look a little better.

With that in mind, which version do you think it's best for my playthrough?.

Thanks in advance!.

I would say classic since there is less bugs/glitches.
Also all the bugs and glitches that you might encounter in either of these are very random and can change. I personally did not see any glitches other have found but i found some bugs that was in classic too.
I started with the remaster because it's the exact same game with some improvements so either way it doesn't matter
yes it has some bugs but with the right settings you won't notice them.
for example; you can play remastered with everything on the highest settings except GPU Physx (has to be on medium) and lock the fps on 60 fps. this way you won't encounter less to none glitches.
Like I said before it really doesn't matter which one you choose, they play the same.
Never played Mafia before, so I can only recommend going straight for the remaster.) Go for definitive!

I'm 5 chapters past, encountered 3 bugs: a pedestrian sliding through textures:

a granny crazy parcouring over a fence back and forward XD
and in the robbery mission, where you have to cross the ledge, cops froze in the stairs way, didnt want to come out, and w/o them a script needed to cross that ledge wouldnt start.

I'll go for the Definitive Edition then. I'll also bear in mind your technical suggestions about GPU and max frame lock to 60 FPS. It's not as bad as I suspected at first glance.

Thanks for the replies.
Id go for Classic if i were you. Negligible improvements and significantly more bugs. And not just mere graphic bugs but bugs that force you to replay entire missions
Hahaha. And now the game ties 2-2.
If this is not a controversial game, I don't know what it is...

I'm on chapter 15 now. What game breaking bugs you encountered?

In Chapter 2 where youre in a fist fight with the guy you borrowed the money from, i managed to push him into a corner from where he got stock and didnt fight back. Thus, i couldnt finish the fight and had to restart all over.
The second major bug was in Chapter 4 where you fight cops on the roof of the mall. I killed them too quickly und broke one of the cops that wouldnt come out of cover, forcing me to start over.

I have at least 10 playthrough of the classic version and none of the bugs i encountered in the "definitive" edition were/are present there.

Well, seems I've described the same mission above. Mine was stuck in the stairway, I managed to get to him and shoot the cop there.

I've had more bugs later in the game: heads were like half-cut, half-misplaced, in the chapter 14 speech dialogues were pronounced twice from different characters simultaneously, so I couldnt understand a thing they were saying :D

But overall, I think it's a nice remake. Doing first DLC now.
Def Classic, Remastered is Riddled with Bugs really really bad port. Animations have no purity to them like the Classic / Original.

One can see it was a rushed effort on the Remaster.

+1 Classic
Classic 3 - Remastered 2. Uhmm.
Can I invite more people that read the post to vote here for his/her favourite?.
Classic. I've barely touched the Definitive Edition, but it's left a really bad impression. It barely looks any better, sometimes even worse. It has some broken character models and animations, as well as performance issues. Just go with the original for a better experience.
