Hollow Knight: Silksong
Silksong Theme Actually Plot Revealing? (Spoilers for the HK series)
Okay, I noticed that the ending notes from the Silksong release trailer sounded familiar. They seem to be the first few notes from Dies Irae, the most famous song from the Requiem Mass and the universal death motif in Western music. If anyone here has watched Death Note, The Shining, Star Wars, The Lion King, or any other movie or series where death is a frequent occurrence, a major event, or a significant concern, they have heard Dies Irae. For The Shining, the main theme is from the scary part of Symphonie Fantastique, the first piece to use Dies Irae as a death motif.

I through this may have just been a nod towards traditional cinematic scoring, but the Silksong theme, which was recently removed from the website, is nothing but those last 4 or 5 notes from the trailer, implying Larkin is being purposeful in his motif choice.

My theory is that, where Hollow Knight (or Hollow Knight: Voidheart, for awesomeness' sake) was about exploring a dead world of zombies and vampires, dead gods and forgotten dreams, Hollow Knight: Silksoul is about dying and 'last rites.' In HKI, we saw the ruins; in HKII, we will see what makes them.

Yes, I beat Hollow Knight and was purposely being a bit vague with some of my points in case people ignored the spoiler warning. Yes, I realize we got to see "what makes them" in the original game, though I think this new game will expand on those ideas.

I was so excited (well, even more than I already was) when I picked out that motif! I'm sure it will have some significance; that theme in particular is not one that is used flippantly.

The entire movement from about 42 seconds in is that phrase repeated. Seems more like an inspiration for the mood of the piece than anything specific.
