"Orcs Must Die!" is single player. Unaffected.
"Orcs Must Die! 2" is peer-to-peer Multi player. Unaffected.
"Orcs Must Die! Unchained" was server based and can no longer be played.
"Orcs Must Die! 3" is not on steam yet, but probably peer-to-peer as well.
OMD! 3 is about to be released on Steam.
For OMD! 1 & OMD! 2 there is a special connection:
If you own both, you get some maps from OMD! 1 twice, with added 2-player possibility.
Here is a comparison of both:
OMD 2 allows you to grind without level / ranking progress. So it is much easier to get stuck in OMD 1, whereas in OMD2 you can find a way out of any predicament by farming for new items. In OMD 1 there is not even a refund option if you bought the wrong gear. So, I'd say that OMD 2 is the less frustrating game. Although a few maps are built for duo, you can still pull them off solo (but need to come up with a good strategy and quite some running to micromanage) in OMD 2. So, even though OMD 1 is overall the harder game, OMD 2 still poses quite some challenges if you want to do an entire solo run before you start relying on partners to bail you out when things get critical. Even in nightmare mode the whole game is soloable, though. I'd recommend getting them both, because OMD2 unlocks extra maps for owners of OMD 1. They are already in OMD 1 (called classic mode in OMD 2 for that matter), but here they have some differences and you can try out co-op on them, and a few new traps as well that are exclusive to OMD 2. Also, you get of course the full first game which has even more maps than the one ported to OMD 2 as classic mode.
OMD! 3 was only available on Stadia.
But as I said, it will come to Steam soon. I am excited about it.
