Game crashes on startup as of today

The game was fine for about a week but I just tried to start it and it crashes on the splash screen before the game even properly loads. I've verified the files, restarted Steam, closed all possible background processes... But it still just crashes about 2 seconds after trying to run it. Anyone else having this problem, or have any ideas how to fix it?

For those of you that are coming back to this game in 2015 and are still having issues running/starting it. I'm currently using Windows 8.1, but booting the game as administrator and Windows XP (Service Pack 3) compatibility did the trick for me (I have yet to resort to reinstalling my entire OS).

i have the same problem. the game freezes at the splash screen logo or right after that. it completely locks up.

i was playing it on both this pc and a laptop a year or ago and it ran fine. now it flat out doesn't work.

i have this on origin, not steam, so the problem isn't limited to the steam version. people at amazon reviews are saying the same thing as well. the game locks up and freezes at startup.

i found a fix for this problem.

this is a copy and paste of the email that EA sent me to fix the problem.

#3 worked for me. so if the steam version of game is freezing, at the splash screen/logo, then maybe try and disable the steam overlay. the origin overlay (IGO) was causing mine to freeze.


There are many possible cause games to crash, freeze, or fail to launch on PCs and Macs. To troubleshoot these issues, please perform these steps. Make sure to perform all of these in order, so that you can isolate the issue:

Basic Steps:

1. Check the minimum system requirements of the game against your computer (Windows / Mac) and update any drivers that are out-of-date.
2. Unplug all USB devices (aside from the mouse and keyboard) and try the game again.
3, Disable the Origin in-game overlay (IGO). To do this, launch the Origin client. Then go to the Origin menu, Application Settings, Origin In Game, and then uncheck "Enable Origin In Game."
4. Update the game.
5. Repair the game install.
6. Update your system. (Windows) (Mac)

Advanced Steps*:

7. Perform a System Restore. We recommend creating System Restore Points before performing this step. For more information, read Microsoft's System Restore FAQ.
8. Run the game as admin.
9. Disable any Firewall / Antivirus apps or programs.
10. Check Windows compatibility with the game.
11. Temporarily disable UAC. (Instructions found in this article)

13. Perform a clean boot.
