Can I join multiple factions without penalty?

Will some factions dislike me if I join certain other factions? Can I only join 1 faction at a time? Is there a penalty for leaving a faction (If possible)? I just want some basic info on how faction mechanics work in this game.

i was faction happy and joined them all as i played. dont know about penalties.

This is wrong. Here's an example: During the quest "Building Bridges" you can choose to visit the Warsworn camp and miss out on the House of Ballads part of the mission storyline.

What Spawk said,you can still do the quests.Hell,even the main quest will take you to the House of Ballads at one point so you'll run into them anyway

Not saying you can't start a separate quest. Just saying some quests branch internally.

You can, and I recommend that you do. I enjoyed the storylines from all the different factions.

Even KoA:R is very very free about abilities and skills choices, I think not all Faction are usefull for any character: for example, I think is questionable to do Warsworn's quests with a magic or dexterity (fae blades and arc) focused character. For this reson I have done 4 different characters and will do all quests of any Faction. Surely there are cross-skills faction's quests, as that of House of Ballades, that give two very different skills other that final reward: I do not explain for spoiler.
