How to fix controls?
I never use WASD, I always use ESDF (a much more natural key combination). However when I try to remap the controls in-game, it does wonky things like map both the right & back key to "D". I can't it to accept my alternate key commands. It's very frustrating.

Anyone know a fix? Thanks!

There's a work around where if you bind the keys in reverse of how they are listed in the menu it works - I think in the menu it lists Up, Down, Left, Right so apparently if you bind them Right, Left, Up, Down it fixes the issue.

What TaCHi said.. I learned to type with 10 fingers when I was about 6 so WSAD feels wrong.. EDSF is the correct positioning... but... is there a fix? Will there be a fix? Or even, can anyone point to an .ini file or something or is it all encrypted?
If I can't reconfigure I just wasted my money buying this. :(

TorQue{MoD} Tried that didn''t work

Sorry I know these are not very helpful comments but it sounds like the games got you in checkmate.

You obviously don''t type with 10 fingers.. Just 2 I guess.
Furthermore I've been using EDSF since DOOM and even if I try to play games in WSAD I'm just bashing the wrong keys because my hand automaticly goes to a "10-finger blind typing position" Because that's where my hand likes to be after doing that for 30-ish years or so.. because that's how long I have my Typing-diploma. Also there is a little notch on the F key to let you know you positioned your hand right. Which has become kinda comforting over the years.. Yeah I feel the notch .. I know I'm on the right key now.. It's rediculous for a game to not have reconfigurable keys.. But I think it's even worst If a game does have reconfigurable keys but the reconfiguring is a FAIL.. And I'm kinda done with scripting my alternate keys in an external program..

So basicly EDSF was my hand position on a keyboard even before I had my first computer.. And I had my first computer in 1984

The coding is bad and the dev should feel bad!!

But for everyone who wants to put in the extra effort keys can be reconfigured thru scripting with an external program.. I'm just not going to do it anymore. In the discussion thread of the first Transformers game you can find the name of that scripting tool... (sorry too lazy to look it up)

EDIT: The program I was talking about for configuring/scripting keys outside of the game is called AutoHotKey.. It's a hassle to set up but it works.. you can at least play with ESDF.. just set your game to default and make a profile in autohotkey to config your keys...

I'm with Spocks on this one, you simply need to move your hand to the left, this is the first time I've ever heard of anyone using ESDF over WASD, I mean.. why did you change from WASD to begin with? Simply to go to the right more? So many games use WASD and E/F for interactions that I feel like you'd spend more time trying to remap controls than necessary just to move to the right half an inch..

I use ESDF as well. I have since Duke3D, which was well before WASD became a standard. Back then the arrow keys were still used and it was up to the user to decide which remaps they used and there really weren't any discussions board conversations about it.

ESDF for movement. A to jump, Z to duck, R was reload. If you use those types of key presses then moving your hand to the right is not a suitable fix. Because people tend to have preferences on how they have keys mapped is why most developers give their customers an option to remap.

What boggles my mind is why other players become so judgmental about other peoples preferences, particularly when options are typically made available. You would think that would be a clear indicator that not everyone uses the same options you do.

I sooo agree with you!

Also.. AZERTY and QWERTZ layouts... think about it...

I noticed it generally would only bind things to whatever right was set to if you tried binding the keys normally.

After hitting set to default, I tried rebinding to ESDF from the bottom up and it did so with no issues.

@OP

I looked everywhere to try to fix the broken ass bindings in the game, my solution is to move from edsf over to yhgj. It's working because my keyboard has the nubs on the f/j so my hand feels in the same place as it usually does. It also allows my pinky to cover 3 bindings.

You basically cannot re-use w, s, a or d keys to map to any other key other than the default bindings, the game flips out. Stay away from those 4 keys and you're good.

Actually you CAN rebind WASD - IF you want to use the arrow keys instead. The fix I used was to rebind the arrow keys (default camera movement) to F1, F2, F3, and F4, basically disabling the camera movement keys. Then I rebind WASD to the now freed up arrow keys.

BUT why is it I have found a solution just by googling?! Here's one I just found:

http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/50738/can-you-rebind-the-movement-keys

Hope it works for you, GDD.

Ahh, I didn't realise being able to type with ten fingers meant you were unable to touch a keyboard in any other way whatsoever. That must be why I'm so bad with a calulator.

In Amalur you dont need the extra key functions which is the reason people use ESDF
There just are not that many function keys to map anyway; so use wasd

1- Go to the controls & reset it to default.

4- Turn Num lock OFF.
5- Map the movement keys with Arrow keys.
6- That's it :)
7- Turn Num lock ON again while playing to use the NumPad keys as camera.

If this fix didn't solve my problem, I would demand my money back as this is not stated clearly on the product page. It renders the game unplayable.

Thanks so much Aquahead. You've just saved this game for me.

To those who said to map the ESDF keys in reverse, that does totally work. Set your controls to default and rebind from the bottom to the top (right, down, left, up). As a fellow ESDF user this saved the game for me.

I found A tip on a remapping tool[segmentnext.com] , but havent tried it myself yet as I can't verify the dl.

It's also getting really annoying with posters asking us to change to wasd with the obvious undertone there is something wrong with us. Some of the comments here is bordeline harrasment. It's a shame there is so much ignorance...

This method worked perfectly for me. Thank you very much. To add to the discussion, I have never used WASD in any game since I started PC gaming around 2004 with the first Far Cry. I am right handed but I use the right hand side of the keyboard. That's just the way it happened and the way it stayed. I always use directional arrows for movement and surrounding keys for sprint, reload, interact etc. Most games are easily re-mapped and a few need a workaround such as the one posted by Aquahead. After all this time, the only game that I'm unable to play is Dead Space due to key re-mapping problems. There is a fix in the community but it didn't work for me. I might try that GlovePIE thing that someone mentioned on here. Thanks again for the helpful post.
