you can still use a weaker destiny and shift points into mage tree, in fact that is pretty common. In fact destinies really are not that important, sometimes the pure destinies are even better depending on your play style even if you invest in multiple trees, just choose your skills and pick your destiny of choice after ;)
faeblades and chakrams are the most enjoable weapons for me, and greatswords are nice and big :D
longsword/staff is a bit lacking, because you have to rely entirely on spells for ranged attacks and the gap closers for both weapons are severly lacking.
