Essentially, you can replace the look of armor with other armors, but very few npc outfits will load as an armor. The varani merchant 1 and 2 outfit works.
It could be because the game doesn't know to load this fab at all times. It might work while you're in rathir for instance as the model is loaded but I haven't tested this theory yet
I have an interseting question while I have you here. Is it possible to make something like the tattered shirt look like the characters naked appearance? That way I could make my naked appearance look like the Dokkalfar clothes and make the tattered shirt look like I have no armor on. I don't like the female armor for the most part and I just run around with pants on anyway.
What would I have to change in a hex editor to do this if it's possible? I've looked through that fab file and I think the tattered shirt is something like character_generation something. Maybe not, but I don't know how to find the hex value for it. I tried entering the id as shown in the fab and also swapping the first 2 and last 2 numbers (I read sonewhere you have to do that. The sequence you shared on reddit, 91 02 09, appears as 090291 in the fab file) but the hex editor can't find the sequence I search for.
For some reason everything in allestar tower is a quest item, so they created different types and fabs despite them looking identical. Also the data in my csvs are in little endian so you'll have to reverse the byte order to find it. E.g.
00 aa bb cc becomes cc bb aa 00 in the save file.
