Considering what you said and having max'd both Sagecrafting and Blacksmithing, i'll state the obvious as well--'
Make sure you create the right set of gems, there's 4 type;
-Weapons and Armor are quite obvious
-Utility is only for your clothing
-Epic gems are for the Chest piece exclusively
By comparing the shape of the gems and sockets, you can tell what your items can or cannot hold, usually for exemple, leggings/gloves/boots can hold anywhere from 1-3 Gems, 3 being 2 Utility/1 Armor.
You can also use the according gems for forging Master equipment.... but let's not get too much ahead, unless you're game aint bugged.... Gems are used as 5th ingredients in blacksmithing.
