Guild Wars might work as well and yeah, you can solo the game except for Inis, but if you go mmos, you could also pick up SWTOR (it's f2p) and play through the story.
combat, characters, mood and overall direction of Hero. Fairly flexible character building but you can't respec. Not much lore though and no crafting.
-Oblivion w/expansions or Skyrim
if it's not there it probably can be found in a mod
Combat, crafting, open-world, lore
-------------- Maybe...
- Witcher 3 (Some ARPG similarities, quite different mood and combat though)
-Dragon Age 2
combat (much faster paced then others in the series) and lore (though Origins is a wonderful game. I'd suggest it first but if you found Dragon Dogma boring, --not sure how --unless you didn't like party mechanics) I suppose you could go from 2 to Inquisition which you may like better than hardcore Origin Fans do.
Some similarities there...if you like collecting things etc.
The combat, though not awkward on PC like Dragon Dogma, is party-based but not nearly as challenging.
There's not much out there that have the best parts this game had to offer, unfortunately. It's not my favorite RPG but it's hard to match in some areas.
I probably should edit the OP to include the fact that I also would rather not do the party mechanics. That was another weird thing about Dogma.
Good to know I can solo Guild Wars; I might pick that one up if it’s on sale.
Techromancer is a pretty cool game, has combat like this and blocking at the right time does the same effect
Mars: War Logs same as above game came out before it.
Bound by Flame same style Combat
Divinity II in terms of overall structure is very similar. Keep in kind that Divinity II doesn't have controller support though.
Fable, in terms of that fantasy setting theme.
Add all 3 together and you get KOA.
Similar combat style and control set up (WASD to move muse to cotrol camera),no party mechanics, SP only, combat and lots of it, lots of loot and nice skill trees, lots of story (text and dialogue similar to KoA:R), choices matter similar to this game, but... if you want to play a customized character or a female character, that is absent.
Some good mods for dragons dogma your meant to play it after the post game, and the pawn system.
No, Guild Wars is totally different. Nothing like KOA at all.
Tried each of the Dark Souls games and never could get into them. Not very challenging and not much depth.
I'd say the difficulty for me came from finding out where to go.
How far did you get? I reckon the game was a bit more interesting than KOA and did a few things better.
I think you'd be better off with the latter option. Otherwise you're going to get a mixture of invalid opinions which states that specific games are like KOA (when in reality they are nothing like KOA).
If you haven't tried Divinity II Director's Cut, I'd say go for that. At least it's alot closer to KOA than Two Worlds or any other western rpg out there. Of course, that closeness may not be anything like what you're looking for. Problem is that it seems like you're lookiny for something more specific than just "similar" or "general feel".

It's currently on sale for $1.99 so... There's really no excuse lol
Yea im afraid he will likely be bored with the combat system and div 2, maybe there are some mods now but compared to koa? Its nothing compared to koas, dragons dogma would be closest.
Risen 3 has an amazing overhaul mod to.
Always nice to be able to try it out before sinking money into a game.
Fortunately for him though, there are tons of hack and slash games with rpg elements which might just fill that void and can match the depth of KOA. I look at KOA as a hack and slash soul in the shell/body of an rpg.
